Leathery upfront, but in a friendly way, with touches of cherry fruit and briary notes alongside. It’s nicely complex, with a silky, almost Burgundian texture, yet you can feel the region’s sunshine in the warmth of this wine’s finish.

Chapoutier’s Les Meysonniers excels in 2005, bursting with floral-spicy nuances reminiscent of nasturtium and crunchy minerals. Still, it’s soft and mouthfilling on the palate. Melon and edible flower flavors give way to spice and mineral on the long finish. Drink now, although adventurous consumers may want to stash a few bottles away.

Peppery and herbal upfront, then come deeper notes of coffee, black olive and sour plum. Rather fleshy for an ’04, with ample mouthfeel and supple tannins. Turns peppery and tart on the finish. A good effort for the vintage.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Shows Chapoutier's trademark attention to mouthfeel in its creamy, supple texture and moutfilling weight; a real deligt. Aromas and flavors run toward red fruit, with raspberries marked by hints off peppery spice.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A simple, straightforward quaffer, with light red fruit scents and flavors and an herbal tinge--like cherries and strawberry compote. turns a bit dusty and drying on the finish, so best with rare beef.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Avoids the sometimes cooked character of the 2003 vintage, showing instead bright raspberry and cassis fruit backed by minerally notes. Firm; not that lush, with crisp minerality in place of acidity. Drink now–2015.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Seemingly at its peak of maturity, although it should stay there for several years, this is a masterful Saint-Joseph, showing great complexity (flowers, pepper, smoke, cherries), ripe fruit and satin-textured tannins. Drink now-2012.

A solid value from the Northern Rhône, the 2007 Petite Ruche is a broad, mouthfilling wine that doesn't go over the top. Instead, the honey, peach and citrus notes gain focus on the slightly oily finish, picking up hints of truffle along the way. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smells clean and fresh, but this wine is less about bouquet and flavor than it is about weight and texture. It's broad and mouthfilling, and while it has modest apple and melon fruit, it's not particularly fruit-expressive, making it a versatile wine with food. Picks up mineral and spice notes on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Explosively rich and unctuous, this verges on being fat and overblown, then takes a few mincing steps back from the edge. Grilled apricot and peach flavors coat the palate, coming to a climax on the long, oily, fruit-filled finish.
