Not quite in synch, with hard, stony aromas yet a round mouthfeel. Citrus, melon and pepper aromas and flavors are solid, but finish a bit short.

Taking its cue from the cool 2007 vintage, this Smaragd is very pure in its fine white fruit flavors, bone-dry with a definite fruit skin texture. It is crisp as much as rich, leaving fresh acidity to finish. Screwcap.

An off-dry Riesling, that preserves the evocative white perfumed fruits and rounds them out with some sweetness. It has an unmistakable almond and green plum flavor that goes with pear juice and a soft, mouthfilling close. Glass stopper.

A bit reticent on the nose, offering little more than hints of honey and peppery spice. It’s much more expressive in the mouth, where it delivers melon, pear and liquid minerals via a full, oily-textured mouthfeel. Imported by Broadbent Selections, Inc.

Fairly big for a federspiel, with hints of honey and ripe apples on the nose, but then it turns less ripe on the palate, picking up intriguing spice drop flavors. Finishes crisp and clean.

The Kollmitz’s Joching vineyard is at the heart of Erich Machherndl’s wines, producing both Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. This Grüner is impressively rich in a smooth, creamy style, with fresh green apples and white currant flavors. It should age well, its richness giving it the right structure.

It is odd to find a Pinot Blanc in the land of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. But a block of loam soil, planted with old vines gave Erich Machherndl the idea for this wine. The concentration of the old vines produces a full, creamy wine, green-plum flavored, with some cinnamon and weight.

Big spice is proper for a Grüner Veltliner Smaragd wine, the richest category in the Wachau. But Machherndl also manages not to forget white fruits, a layer of acidity, and a full, but crisp varietal character.

The tight, firm fruit is closed now, but there is a full structure that leaves the taste of fresh, clean kiwi fruit, citrus and pepper. This should develop well over the next 3–4 years.
