Cheesy, rooty aromas of root beer, cola, leather and vanilla lead to a fairly round palate of roasted berry flavors. Feels a little on the flat side, with rooty flavors picking up the finish. Decent but more leafy and dried out than expected.

Here’s a good Tempranillo from a prime growing zone within the sprawling La Mancha region. The wine displays serious fruit quality as the black cherry and dark plum flavors kick it out. On the palate, the balance is right where you want it. For a joven that sees only six months in oak, it has the right amount of chocolaty framing. Not an overcropped mass-market wine; only 4,000 cases were made. Imported by Jorge Ordoñez/Fine Estates from Spain.

A big, jammy youngster with earth and rubber on the nose. Firm, bullish and tannic but also lively, dark-fruited and touched up with bacon. Finishes with heat and bitterness. Meaty and rugged yet still pretty good.

Dense in color, this pours on the sugar beet and wild field aromas to the point that the nose isn’t very appealing. Equally challenged is the sour, monotone palate. Peppy, but not much to offer.

Strange how sour and unappealing this tastes when it smells pretty decent. It’s not a well-balanced specimen; the acidity is up there and the mouthfeel is stark.
