From longtime Catena winemakers Mariano de Paola and Pepe Galante, this is a deep, black-fruited Malbec with a cushioned bouquet, violet notes and delightful blackberry character. The palate is deep, juicy, healthy and balanced, and the finish is smooth and offers a whiff of coconut. Solid, serious and good now through 2013.

Tropical on the nose, with floral, lychee aromas that seem more like Torrontés than typical Sauvignon Blanc. In the mouth, the feel is basic, with sweet flavors of lychee, mango and melon. Vacuous on the finish, but overall it’s not going to turn anyone off.

Light and fresh, with neutral aromas. The palate is pithy and drying, with persistent apple and lime flavors. Some bitterness works its way onto the finish, but it’s more like grapefruit pith than anything offensive. Good and eminently drinkable given Argentina’s spotty record with SB.

A mature, restrained wine with earth, leather, red pepper flake and dry fruit on the nose. The palate is roasted and a touch acidic, but because of that you’ll never perceive it as fat and lazy. Finishes with some baked brown sugar, leather and tannic grab. A good food wine. Made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot.

Ripe, bold and creamy, with vanilla and plum aromas. Vivid on the palate, with cherry, blackberry, coffee and chocolate flavors all registering. It’s almost a lush wine, but there’s firm but controlled acidity and tannins that keep it from losing focus. A Malbec that rises and conquers, and the price is right.

This Bordeaux-style blend is rather heavy, and from the bouquet you can tell that it carries a strong level of oak. The palate is full of red fruit and spunk, but as you let it sit on the palate the acidity comes on aggressively before finishing a bit rough.
