Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Here’s a buttery and creamy expression of the Friulano grape with rich density and good complexity. There’s a slightly lactic note of fruit yogurt or crème caramel that doesn’t disturb too much. It has fresh, fruity layers with candied fruit in the mouth and a crisp finish.

Clear notes of sweet cherry and vanilla on the nose make the invitation. Very clean and dominated by red fruits. Enough body to stand up to spicy fare. Fresh, alive and a good indicator of overall vintage quality.

Marega Merlot - 1997

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a really nice, creamy Chardonnay from northern Italy with thick streaks of glycerin on the glass and aromas of pineapple, pear, melon, peach and a hint of vanilla. The alcohol does come through and the wine delivers loads of chewy yellow fruit on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This unwooded Chardonnay shows a good deal more charachter than most of the Italian wines made of the grape. Pear, peach, anise and mineral aromas and flavors show considerable complexity and the texture on the long finish is quite full and almost buttery--surprising in a wine that sees no oak and no malolactic fermentation.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
At 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet and 5% Gamay (of all things), this is clearly not your average Italian red wine. It’s got some raisin, spiced cherry and oak aromas, which are followed by baked apple and cinnamon flavors. It’s dry and woody, with developed but integrated tannins. Multifaceted and different, and definitely not New World in style. A bit too stretched and acidic to rank higher.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
After fermentation, this wine rests on the lees for two months, which explains its very nutty nose: almonds and pine nuts over pineapple and pear. Light and lean in the mouth. Imported by Laird & Company.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
If you enjoy picking apart a wine--finding all of its tiny nuances and eccentricities--you'll find plenty here. From its smoky, beeswax-like and menthol aromas to its flavors of melon and citrus, there's plenty of interest, yet the wine delivers more intellectual excitement than hedonism.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a fragrant Pinot Grigio with aromas of stone fruit, citrus and melon that delivers a thin and somewhat watery mouthfeel followed by a crisp, fresh close. It’s an easy, informal wine that could be paired with afternoon finger foods.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Riesling-Chardonnay blend is named after and aged in Holbars, traditional acacia-wood casks. Nut, spice, lychee, honey and black pepper elements all vie for attention in the intense bouquet. Dry, very ripe melon, orange honey and spice flavors derive from the late-picked (but not late harvest designated) fruit, and (presumably) the acacia. This distinctive white finishes long, with peach and spice notes.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Unusual and elegant, this red from northeastern Italy is mostly Merlot, blended with Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Gamay. The complex plum, ripe berry, herb and cedar notes of the noseopen to a medium-weight palate of dry cherry and earth flavors. It's quite alive and graceful at six years, and closes handsomely with even tannins on the finish.
