This semisweet white can come across likable or awful, depending on your mood and the shape of the bottle you’re drinking. The sample we tried for this review was in perfect shape, and it showed tropical fruit and pineapple aromas in front of sugary mango and melon flavors.

If the question is, “what should a proper lady drink in hundred-degree weather?”, Satinela is the answer. It’s feminine, sweet and zippy—even a little spritzy—in the mouth, with honeysuckle and yellow fruit flavors, and perfumed, garden-vegetable and lemon aromas. With 3% residual sugar, it will be too sweet for many, and just right for others. —D.M.

Might this be the best wine Marqués de Cáceres has produced? The vintage is one of Spain’s greatest, and gran reserva is supposed to be Rioja in its loftiest form. So indulge in this beauty’s rock-solid structure, lovely violet and raspberry aromas, and long, stout finish. Best from 2012–2018.

Baked pastry and warm berry aromas are the opening salvo, with dry, almost toasty fruit sitting on the palate. It's not oak-aged yet it has that type of weighty personality. Finishes fairly flat and weighty, with lower-than-expected acidity.

Made from Viura and Malvasia, this plump barrel-fermented white begins with refreshing, clean aromas of pear and apple. Similar flavors follow, and despite the barrel influence the oak flavor is nominal. The lengthy finish is lively but smooth. Its size, grip and balance are all just right.

Cáceres does basic Viura as well as anyone in Spain. Every year this wine shows a confident blend of citrus and mineral, with aromas of citrus fruits and pineapple and flavors of green apple and lime. It’s juicy, fresh and amounts to the quintessential summer sipper.

Cotton candy and warm, dusty aromas give the wine pleasant, semisweet opening aromas. The palate is round and solidly formed, with creamsicle flavors and a bit of brown sugar or treacle. A good wine with just a touch of sweetness in the middle; must be a touch of residual sugar here.

Light and moderately oaky, with dry, herbal accents to the red-fruit aromas that are dominant. Light cherry and strawberry are the key flavors, and they’re backed by notes of toast, chocolate and leather. Classic and solid, especially for a down year.

Big and bulky, with jammy, bacon-fat aromas that register as clumsy and rubbery. Seems to be on the fade; ten years into its existence the fruit has gone heavy and chewy. The plum and chocolate are still present and accounted for, but there isn’t much balance or structure. Was probably better five years ago.

Gets off the mark with savory aromas akin to bean and bacon soup, wood smoke and dried herbs. Next comes raspberry and plum fruit supported by ample oak-based vanilla. Finishes creamy, round and solid. Just a sip or two and you know you’re drinking true Rioja.
