Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
In 2001 (the best Rioja vintage prior to 2004) this wine cost $15 and rated 87 points. Now it’s $42 and it’s worth it. Smooth and inviting on the nose, with coconut, toast and black fruit aromas. In a word, the bouquet is inviting. And the palate seals the deal; there’s a creamy feel and loads of fruit and vanilla to fill the gaps. Drink now through 2009.

Offers an attractive mix of herb, oak and ripe fruit aromas. The palate is sunny, and thus bright fruit in the form of raspberry and cherry shines. Full and lengthy on the finish, with chocolate as the lasting flavor.

Dark and tight, with plenty of resiny oak on the nose along with rich, meaty black-fruit aromas. The blend is 40% Tempranillo with 20% each of Cabernet, Merlot and Malbec. The result amounts to size and a cushioned, ripe mouthfeel. Despite the Cab’s presence, it’s still a bit low on acid, so it tips the scale toward heavy. Drink now through 2011.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Much like the Durius Tempranillo-Merlot blend, this Syrah is made in a well-oaked, international style. The fruit is forward and lush, and the oak is spicy, sweet and leans toward cinnamon and vanilla. Grapey and ripe across the palate and then toasty, peppery and chocolaty on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A little leafy, a little spicy and a little bit of a throwback to the days when Rioja wasn’t taken so seriously. This has light cinnamon oak shadings followed by cola, tobacco and sweet berry flavors. Somewhat acidic and sheer, so better with food; drink now.

Right from the start you know this wine is challenged. The nose is lean and green, with hints of tea and citrus peel. In the mouth, it’s snappy and traditional, meaning there’s American oak dill notes brushing up against rhubarb and red cherry. Proponents will cite its “classic” character while others will call it thin and not very rewarding.

Lean and dilute from start to finish. The fruit is in the sour cherry category and the acidity is high. Finishes almost lemony.

Lemon peel and citrus aromas are the proper foreshadowing of what’s to come: a tart, lean, old-style wine that is ultimately lean and grabby. These days you have to give the consumer more richness and flavor than this.

Spicy and reedy in an old-fashioned way. This wine represents traditional Riojano winemaking: it’s tight, acidic and endowed with racy rhubarb, raspberry and dill flavors. Pretty full and big on the palate, with touches of green herb and spice on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dark, well oaked and slightly bretty, this blend of Tempranillo and Merlot is structured but smooth. It pours on the blackberry, chocolate and spice flavors and backs them up with a chocolaty, mildly herbal finish. A bit chunky and awkward but a full-bodied, honest effort. Drink now–2010.
