Break out the prosciutto, potstickers and other delicious appetizers for this crisp, fruity wine. The zesty acidity brightens fresh flavors of lemons, limes and kiwis. Shows how beautifully this little appellation in the Salinas Valley treats white wines.

Ultra-soft, lacking structure, and with some vegetal and herb notes alongside the cherries. Not very satisfying, but drinkable.

Give this young puppy a few years to shed its babyfat. It’s a bit tannic and hard now, although the blackberry, currant and cedar flavors are just fine. But it’s not a longterm ager due to some raisining.

Lots of juicy blackberry, cassis and cedar flavors in this dry, full-bodied young wine. But it’s also very tannic, with a lockdown astringency. Seems to have the stuffing for more than six years in the cellar.

Martin Ranch Syrah - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Rich and ripe in juicy blackberries, currants and cedar, with thick tannins. But there’s a sharp acidity that kicks in immediately and detracts from the mouthfeel. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This winery seems to be trying to find an identity. The Cabs are vintage-driven, and do better in cool years, which 2004 wasn’t. This wine is a little soft and direct, but delicious enough, with ripe, pastry-filling blackberry, cherry, boysenberry and chocolate flavors. You can taste high-char oak on the finish.

The valley is today’s modern Silicon Valley, but used to be one of the most famous placenames in California wine. This Syrah is dry and classy, with a Côtes-du-Rhône berried deliciousness and a soft, immediate appeal.

Definitely on the ripe, hot side, with blackberry flavors veering all the way into shrivelled raisins. With lots of new oak, the wine is fully dry, but at the cost of very high alcohol, 15.6%, which gives the palate a Port-like burn.
