Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This Bordeaux blend (40% Malbec, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc) shows some leathery notes in the aromas, more herb and dusty earth than the single varietal wines, and mixed red fruits. Light hints of cinnamon and cocoa are nicely laid in; the tannins, as with the other reds, are quite astringent.

Earthy, dry and tannic, with roasted earth, dark fruits and a more herbal, less ripe profile overall. Good, workmanlike, Bordeaux-style Cabernet.

Maryhill Cabernet Sauvignon - 2002

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is light and seems a little sparkly, as if there is a hint of secondary fermentation going on. For Cab Franc it’s light and generic, without the spice or substance of the grape.

Maryhill Cabernet Franc - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is not a truly dry style; the relatively low (11.6%) alcohol is backed with a palate impression that is a bit sweet, but the wine retains enough acid to provide balance. It’s a forward, fruity, round and flavorful, consumer-friendly style. It would work well with spicy food if served chilled.

Maryhill Sangiovese - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
As is most often the case with Sangiovese, this comes across as a pleasant, rather generic red wine that could be almost anything. The fruit tastes of light cherry and plum, with a rather sour finish. Tannins are earthy and there is a hint of sweaty saddle as well.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dark, smoky and herbal, this wine, the second Malbec from Maryhill, does capture some of that grape’s lovely character. Tart wild berry fruit is cut with sharp acids, and laced with herb and hints of stone. There is a bit of saddle leather showing through the tannins, but not so much as to wipe out the sweet fruit. A persistent finish tastes like fresh picked raspberries.

Maryhill Malbec - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Serendipity is the name of Maryhill’s most expensive wine, a Bordeaux blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. Complex, intertwined scents of berry, herb, mint, spice and leather open up in the mouth into an interesting wine that shows a lot of different flavors. With just a little more bottle age the finish should resolve; at the moment the herbal character turns vegetal, and there are some vinegary acids.

Maryhill Red Blend - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Bone dry, earthy and leathery, this Proprietor’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon seems a bit tired. The fruit is showing early signs of fading, and the tannins—earthy, green and a bit rough—may already be taking over. Some earthy, organic, almost biodynamic flavors come out in the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smooth, flavorful and fairly priced—what else could one want? It’s starts off a bit toasty and smoky, then delivers waves of caramel, smoked meat and berry flavor, supple tannins and an elegant finish.

Maryhill Syrah - 2003

0 out of 0 people thought this note was helpful.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This herbal, tannic Syrah is a serviceable bottle that would be especially good with a simple flank steak. Scents are a mix of grape blossom, cherry and coffee. The wine is solid and one dimensional and finishes with a strong herbal streak.
