Deep and wild up front, with a streak of mint and clove running through the pretty black plum that carries the nose. Cherry, raspberry and apple skin flavors are jazzed up by pepper and nutmeg hints, while the finish is lovely. Overall it’s soft, with notes of butter and baked apples. Intense and angular, age it for at least two years.

Word has it that 2001 is a benchmark year for Priorat, and this early bird seems like a positive indicator. It has some earth and mushroom on the nose, but also plenty of sweet fruit and cinnamon. The palate is chunky and unbridled, with all the plum, berry and apple skin one could ask for. A chewy finish with a creamy chocolate base seals the deal in a winning way.

Made mostly from Garnacha Blanca, this wine is odd. It has sugary hay-like aromas and bland yet sweet pear flavors. It grabs a little at the edges, and it never reaches stride or makes an impact.

A lovely and unusual Bergamot-like citrus-blossom note runs through this attractive wine. The full nose displays hay and creamy nougat, and the mouth is a melange of orange, almond and herb flavors. This solid white has unique character and closes long, with citrus and nut flavors and a fine spicy back-bouquet. Worth seeking out, this is reminiscent of some Rhône whites. —M.M.
