Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Abruzzo region of Central Italy boasts many unknown treasures; among the most beautiful of its riches is Villa Gemma. The late vintner Gianni Masciarelli has tamed the wild beast that is Montepulciano by creating a smooth, soft and extraordinarily rich wine that speaks volumes about the territory and the man who shaped it.

The nose is more neutral than other Trebbianos from the same vintage but it does offer a pretty embroidery of fresh fruit, nut and dusty mineral. Lean and somewhat watery in the mouth, the wine closes on a tart citrus note.

Here’s a heavy, big wine with dense concentration and overt oak-driven aromas that pack a powerful punch. The wine tastes sticky and syrupy but also delivers the staying power and persistency to make it work.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s a bright and zesty aroma here that recalls tangerine skin or lemon zest, acting as a delicate accent over blackberry and mature cherry. This is dark, inky red wine from Central Italy with a lively but masculine personality.

This is an herbal expression of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo with aromas of dried grass and dandelions. There’s not much fruit but there are bitter spice tones of clove and nutmeg that could work with Mexican or other spicy foods.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a showcase wine for the region of Abruzzo that delivers mature notes of peach, rounded toasted notes of honey and pear. As a whole, it is harmonious and flowing and is surprisingly fresh and tonic despite the hot vintage.

Gianni Masciarelli has mastered the tricky art of growing Chardonnay in the Abruzzo and this sophisticated, barrique-aged wine shows his enormous talent. Dedicated to his wife, layered aromas here include vanilla extract, pineapple, honey and almond backed by elegant mineral nuances. Wood-driven flavors are underplayed in the mouth, allowing the quality of the fruit to show.

This is special, with uniquely distinctive undertones of smoky warm honey, lavender essence, acacia flower, baked apple and barbecue spice. In the mouth, you get pure lavender honey and pungent rosemary oil.

Named for a beautifully restored castle and boutique hotel in Abruzzo, this beautiful Italian white (made with Trebbiano grapes) shows a delicious creamy texture with abundant aromas of stone fruit, honey and toasted almond. The wine is thick and textured on the close.
