Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
For a few years running we've been singing the praises of Abadal, a label from Catalonia that has been producing hit upon hit. This blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah from the excellent 2001 vintage is in super form; the wine has a ripe, integrated nose of cocoa, dark fruit and chocolate, while the palate is bold and loaded with vivacious cherry and blackberry flavors. From front to center to back, this wine has it all going in the right direction. Good now through 2012.

Always a good bet, this CS-Merlot blend is smoky, tightly structured, piercing and generous. The flavors are of cassis and plum, while the finish is textured, round and ends with a blast of bitter chocolate. Fulfilling, lively Spanish wine. Recommended for the price.

Merlot, Cabernet and a splash of Syrah are brought together in solid, inspiring fashion by this Catalonian winery. Cherry and raspberry aromas are hoisted by full oak, while the finish deals a basket of berry flavors and ripeness. For the most part this is an in-your-face wine that’s clearly been made from good grapes.

Fresh, light and peachy is this three-way blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and the native Picapoll. The nose is clean and alluring, with no oak, while the flavors run toward pineapple, green apple and wet stones. More crisp than heavy, with a good feel and full, bracing acidity.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
All the wines in the Abadal line seem commited to serious aromas and flavors supported by honest structure. This Merlot from an obscure Catalonian wine region offers blackberry, cigar box and raisin aromas in front of additional blackberry flavor. There’s also chocolate folded into the finishing layers. Integrated and properlly welded by firm tannins.

Serious wines from a tiny inland appellation in Catalonia—that’s Abadal, a maker of true terroir wines that succeed way more often than they disappoint. This blend of Cab Sauvignon, Cab Franc and Syrah is minerally and full of red fruit and vanilla aromas. The palate is husky but correct, with full tannins, a kick of acidity and pure, ripe berry flavors. Even from a tough vintage it justifies its selected status.

Not one of Abadal’s best wines, this 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Sumoll rosé is a touch flat on the nose, with tea and medium-sweet cherry flavors. It’s big on the tongue but also sort of dull and pithy. Must be the Cabernet that makes it a little heavy.

An unusual blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Picapoll that hits with apple and melon aromas. The palate is soda-like, with zest, spritz and tangy lemon-lime and green apple flavors. Dry, pithy and a little strange in its flavor profile. Imported by Grapes of Spain.

A real surprise! Who in their right mind could expect so much quality from a Cab Franc-Tempranillo blend from Penedès? But try it and we guarantee you’re going to like it. The nose is meaty, ripe and round, while the palate features pure core fruit backed by chocolaty warmth. With kick as well as subtlety, this is a bargain hunter’s dream. Imported by Grapes of Spain.

Open and lighter framed, with berry aromas and a strong scent of black olive. Somewhat salty and herbal, but also fairly fruity and spunky. Shows plenty of acidity and tannin. Imported by Grapes of Spain.
