Winery - Mastrojanni

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Antonio Mastrojanni has made a classic, old-style Brunello. There is a chunky solidity to the wine, with black, tarry fruit over toasty, but not new wood, flavors. It is firm, robust and, at this stage, still very dry from fruit tannins. Like many Mastrojanni vintages, it needs time—in this case, at least 10 years.

This delicious vineyard select Brunello offers loads of intensity and warm aromas of leather, tobacco, spice, wild mushroom, smoked ham and bursting blackberries. It’s a ripe and succulent wine with firm tannins and excellent length on the finish.

A touch rusty and weathered given its young age, but classic on the nose, where there’s tomato, pepper and dried red fruit. This is very drinkable now, and after a few minutes in the glass it begins to show more. Traditional, and just perfect for restaurants and early drinking.

A zippy, snappy wine with forest berry and menthol freshness, bitter tea tannins, ripe blueberry flavors and background aromas such as resin and wet slate. A big Brunello nose with a medium-length finish. Imported by Selected Estates of Europe Ltd.

Austere and sophisticated with penetrating layers of Indian spice, dark fruit and cured meat, Mastojanni delivers the kind of Brunello you’ll want to pair with the best cuts of lamb or beef. This is an elegant and linear wine and the dark fruit element adds softness to the overall texture.

We are impressed with what the Illy brothers (of the Italian coffee dynasty) have done with this historic brand from Montalcino. The wine shows personality and distinction thanks to its aromas of wild cherries, cassis, light smoke and Spanish cedar. There’s bright acidity and elegance here.

Spanish cedar, cola and bright cherry notes open the nose of this beautiful Rosso di Montalcino. Added complexity is evident in the many spice and leather notes you’ll encounter here and the mouthfeel is tonic, tight and rich enough to stand up to game and red meats.

Tight, with briar, leather and smoke aromas, along with plum and cherry. The palate on this one seems a bit jumpy, with live-wire fruit and bright acidity. So it’s interesting that the finish carries some coconut, vanilla and sweet butter flavors. Needs a couple of years to knit together. Imported by Selected Estates of Europe Ltd.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
One of Montalcino’s most historic brands, Mastrojanni was purchased by one of the founders of Illy espresso. The new ownership has completely revamped the retro look of this Brunello but has taken great care to maintain quality. This is a delicious wine with vibrant fruit flavors, spice and lingering freshness on the close.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
There’s good aromatic intensity in the form of espresso bean, vanilla, black currant and blueberry preserves. This is a hot vintage wine and it shows. It has chewy, sour tannins and did not perform as well as previous vintages. Founded in 1975, Mastrojanni is one of Montalcino’s benchmark estates.
