Mauro will always show you a lot, but frankly this 2005 seems soft and chunky. It has rich, baked, black-fruit aromas and then a mildly syrupy palate with huge blackberry and cassis flavors. The finish is wide and rich, but where are the tannins and structure that this wine is known for? Drink now for best results; it may not improve in the cellar. A Europvin, Christopher Cannan selection, imported by multiple importers, including Michael Skurnik Wines.

Starts with aromas of beef jerky, licorice and berry syrup. It’s a brawny, dark wine with jammy blackberry flavors along with chocolate cake and thick, grabbing tannins. Finishes sweet and syrupy, with heavy saturation and big tannins. Not in perfect balance and by no means a great wine from Mauro. But it’s still good for an off year. Sweet and rich, with aromatic notes of barbecued meats, blackberry and wild flowers. Quite bold and chewy, but with an acidic middle that preserves balance like an angel. For the maximum in terms of plum, blackberry and licorice, this one delivers the goods. It’s mouthfilling and delicious, with tannic structure and a chocolaty smoothness.

Tasted just days after bottling, this wine was nevertheless showing well. Rich chocolate and earth aromas complement the red berry and black cherry fruit. Mauro is not huge or overly weighty, but displays notable intensity and persistence of flavor. The finish lingers delicately, folding hints of vanilla, licorice and cinnamon. Editors’ Choice.

This wine has already been bottled, but likely won’t reach U.S. shores until 2002. It needs the additional time, because aromatically it’s closed right now, tight as a drum. Still, you can taste the potential in its earthy, dark fruit and coffee flavors. With this kind of depth and intensity and a long, supple but tannic finish, 91 points may seem conservative in five years’ time.

Sweet, succulent aromas draw you in and while the wine doesn’t deliver much nuance on either the nose or palate, we can’t quibble with the power, purity and intensity of the blackberry fruit. It’s young, tannic and tough now, so give it two years and it should be an excellent wine.
