So far (two vintages) this high-end Limarí SB has shown positives and shortfalls. The nose on the ’08 is of lettuce, bell pepper and pickle, while the palate is lean, green and a little mean. On the plus side, there’s pointed acidity, minerality and length. A particular style that needs work.

Dense, powerful and dark on the nose, then tight, concentrated and narrow on the palate, with pulsing berry and coffee flavors along with restrictive tannins. The finish is tight and lemony, with citric acidity forcing mild tartness into the picture. Best if you like zestier, more austere Syrahs.

Try as I might, I haven’t been able to jump on board this wine since it debuted three harvests ago. The nose is minerally but short on fruit, which pretty much describes the wine. It’s lemony, sharp-edged and lean, with a minerally foundation and modest fruit character. What it lacks is a middle tier or two.

One of Chile’s more personality-driven Syrahs is Maycas, from Limarí. It’s a condensed, meaty and structured wine with mineral, toast and ribald blackberry aromas. The palate is rich but well built, with plum, berry, herb and chocolate flavors. Warm and long on the finish, and layered. Sophisticated enough to give the world’s better-made Syrahs a run for their money.

Warm oak on the nose is like hot dust on the radiator, and beyond that it smells mildly sweet, with a shot of apple pie. The palate is fresh and racy, but not lean. And the flavors of apple, kiwi and lemon are focused. Narrow on the finish, with citrus, minerality and oceanic freshness. Not overly generous but solid and reflective of Limarí’s terroir.

It took this Concha y Toro specialty label a few years to find its footing with Sauvignon Blanc, but in 2010 they found it. This is a subtle but chiseled wine with structure, juicy acidity and pure apple, lime and tarragon flavors. It’s consistent from nose to tail, and it’s deep and layered, too.

Dark, sweet, subtle and smooth, with complexity that’s unleashed with proper airing. There’s minerality and perfume on the nose, and while it’s rich and supple in the mouth, the blackberry, raisin and fig flavors are not saggy. Pillowy, but with good concentration. Drink from late 2010 through 2012.

Heavily toasted, but with minerality the nose works. The palate starts with forward woodiness, but soon thereafter apple and green banana flavors push the oak aside. Very nice in terms of feel even if the acidity keeps it cranking. Additional resin and vanilla take over on the finish. A better wine with less oak? You be the judge.

For a first vintage out of northerly Limarí Valley, this Concha y Toro effort from winemaker Marcelo Papa exceeds any reasonable expectations. It’s an exotic, unique version of perfectly ripe, healthy Syrah from a perfect Chilean vintage. It steamrolls with maxed-out wild berry fruit, a saturated feel and backbone. Enjoy now and over the next few years.

Maycas is Concha y Toro’s Limarí Valley project, and the wines show terroir and personality. However, $55 is a lot to ask for this minerally, reserved style of Chardonnay. The palate and nose are narrow and stony, with pineapple and citrus flavors and tight, driving acidity. 500 cases made.
