Raw at first, but it comes around. Early sauvage aromas yield to dried fruit, a touch of dill and butter, and char. The palate is all about red fruit, with cherry and tar dominant. Has a bit of a lactic, creamy quality at the end.

Roberto Mazzi’s family has produced a spicy and thick vineyard-designate Valpolicella with lush tones of mature fruit followed by toasted nut and old leather. Crisp berry tones, a thin mouthfeel and fresh acidity are framed against a background of ripe berry fruit.

Castel adheres to Amarone tradition with aromas of red cherry, dried apple skin, exotic spice, cured meat and leather. The wine sits on the palate with heavy density and some sweet flavors but soft tannins and a bright touch of acidity help cap a refreshing mouthfeel.

Thin, informal and packed tight with crisp wild berry flavors, this bright Valpolicella will slice through fatty or cheesy dishes. In the mouth, it shows an easy, no-fuss approach with a citrus twist on the fade.

This is difficult to score because its aromas dart off in opposite directions making it hard to discern the quality of the fruit. I picked up citrus notes, like pink grapefruit and lemon zest, on one side of the spectrum and heavy notes of tar, resin and asphalt on the other. The 24 months in barrique add soft layers of chocolate and spice in the mouth.
