The Stone Ranch Zins I’ve had over the years have generally been very good, but this is the best in many years. Probably the warm vintage was responsible. It coaxed fabulously rich flavors from the 80-year-old vines, from chocolate, blueberry pie and blackberry jam to espresso, sweet leather and cinnamon. The wine is soft, dry and warming, a perfect elaboration of ripe Alexander Valley Zin.

Not much going on fruit-wise in this lean, but clean, brisk wine. Oak stars, with charry caramel and vanilla overpowering the modest peach and apricot flavors.

With 15.5% alcohol, this wine is too hot for balance. It also tastes unnecessarily sweet, with sugared raspberry, cherry and blackberry flavors.

Super-ripeness defines this wine. It’s responsible for the high alcohol, incredibly rich flavors of cherry liqueur-infused chocolate candy and raspberry gumdrop, and the low acidity, so soft it’s like butter. But Zin’s natural tannins survive, giving structural integrity to this dry, opulent wine.

A lovely wine with classic Viognier fruit - peach and honeysuckle with a trace of citrus - deepening into a layered and long finish. It has the strength and richness to match with fairly spicy dishes.

Pours lightish in ruby color, smells rich and detailed in Pinot aromas, and drinks dry and elegant, with ripe Pinot fruit. What’s not to like? Cherries, cola, rosehip tea and cinnamon spice flavors mingle into a wonderfully long finish, in a texture marked by silk and satin. Drink now.

As in previous vintages, this wine, with an alcohol reading of 15.9%, is too hot and glyceriney-sweet for balance, despite savory flavors of blackberries and chocolate.

The alcohol is so high, at 16.3%, that the wine tastes overtly sweet, and may even have residual sugar. The result is awkward, with a peppery, dessert pastry flavor.

This is an elegant beauty; supple with layers of fruit and lingering spice. There’s a touch of mint rounding the cherry-dominated flavors. The finish is lingering, with ripe bing cherry fruit dominating.
