Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Sharp, spicy and crisply defined with citrus fruits and skins. The skin flavors really punch through and add power to the midpalate. May have some Picpoul in the blend (to cut the alcohol?).

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Rich, ripe and round, this lush take on Roussanne is loaded with cantaloupe, sweet pineapple and Meyer lemon fruit flavors. The fruit is brought forward by a small amount of residual sugar, which seems like an enhancement in this instance. The finish has just a hint of honey cough drop—sweet and slightly minty.

This pure Syrah from a great Red Mountain vineyard is a classic in every respect. Deep, succulent black fruits are underscored by tart acid, bone-dry tannins and the vineyard’s typical mineral streak. Hints of pepper are sprinkled throughout, and the tight, concentrated layering promises good aging potential. 197 cases made.

This is 58% Viognier and 42% Chardonnay, making a crisp, clean, dynamic white with plenty of lime and citrus flavor. Delicious and refreshing, it’s a perfect food wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Reductive aromas of burnt matchstick and rubber gradually fade to reveal the coffee, molasses and meat notes that dominate this wine. Creamy and full-bodied, but lacking obvious fruity character. Finishes with soft tannins.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From a hillside vineyard; starts with refined but closed aromas of blackberry, pepper and smoky oak. There’s a polished structure, with silky, intricate tannins and good acids. Has a core of round, sweet berry fruit flavors that lead to a lingering finish.

Aromas are meaty and bacon fat, with tons of spicy white pepper and blackberry notes. Drinks dense and young, jammy, with oodles of freshly crushed blackberries. Gentle but firm tannins give it great structure.

Now in its third vintage, this Mourvèdre (with 11% Syrah in the blend) is better than ever. More than just a fruity, spicy-sweet red wine, it’s got a luscious, smoky, gamy quality now showing for the first time. Dark and powerful, with flavors of graphite running through the tannins, superb definition and appealing minerality.

This particular bottling belongs with the very best Syrahs from this Syrah-infatuated state. A broad, toasty, full-bodied and fully realized wine, it has begun to smooth out from the extra years in bottle, but has a long life ahead. Berries, cherries, chocolate, coffee, mocha, tobacco, fungus, graphite… the flavors go and go.

Among McCrea’s Rhône-inspired white wines, this is the most complete and complex. It’s rich and dense, with honeycomb, lychee, lemon rind, pineapple and lots of stone—lovely and lingering. It seems to gain strength as it rolls through a sensational finish.
