Telltale oak is manifested in the scents of smoke and bacon fat aromas, though that oakiness overshadows the black fruit. In the mouth, you get some black cherry and blackberry, but also plenty of vanilla and licorice. With decent depth and moderate complexity, this is a good, likable wine. —M.S.

This dark, rich, earthy wine is notable for its ultrasoft but pleasing tannins. The fruit veers toward plum and blackberry, but it’s not superfruity—rather, it’s more restrained, with notes of sun-dried tomatoes and herbs. It turns a little thin on the finish, although there’s plenty of spice. Best Buy.

From Murray Darling, an area that straddles northern Victoria and New South Wales, this Merlot is an easy quaffer with bouncy plum fruit, earth and just the right amount of oak. Just one of many great McPherson’s buys; their Shiraz and Chardonnay (both 87 points, $7) are also worthwhile.

Light, breezy aromas of plum, cherry and rhubarb on the nose; the red fruit gets sweeter on the palate, where it tastes more like fresh raspberries. A good but simple wine with fine, powdery tannins on the finish, and small-boned for a Cabernet.

Sure to have widespread appeal, the McPherson has more of a red-berry flavor profile than its compatriots. Bright red fruit shows up on the nose with molasses highlights; in the mouth, the fruit is doused in some chalk and dried spices. Chalk and bright berries linger on the finish. Best Buy.

It’s black cherries all the way in this clean, dry wine. The fruit is ripe and polished, wrapped in chewy tannins, and set off by crisp acidity. Little evident oak, but the pretty flavors really don’t need any.

There isn’t much depth here, and the cassis flavor has a chemical aspect to it. The structure, however, is fine and the finish long. It’s a lightweight but shouldn’t be difficult to enjoy with some roast beef.

The bouquet is like a puffy cloud of confectioner’s sugar, laced with a ribbon of tight citrus. Tropical, buttery fruit shows in the mouth, with an impression of residual powdered sugar that lingers from the nose. Well balanced, if a little sweet for the panel’s taste.

This dry wine has seeped tea and oak flavors riding in the front seat. Still, there’s a nice core of taut red fruit, and dusty red fruit on the nose, that make it worth a look.
