Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is a rather bulky, chunky Merlot, with decent levels of grapy black cherry and cassis fruit. It lacks elegance, but makes up for it with plenty of intensity and flavor. Drink now.

Crisper and tighter than most other Australian Chards in this bracket, this value-priced offering from McWilliams features ample flavors of pear, citrus and toasty hints of wood. Drink now.

Though the aromas of silly putty, blackberry, vanilla and dust are nice, what you get on the palate is pretty pedestrian: fresh berry flavors, and a lightish body. Straightforward but good. Imported by Devries.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With its warm and fuzzy nose of vanilla, buttered toast and freshly cut apples, this is a wine that’s easy to like. The moderately intense palate shows some candied orange peel notes and fades to a moderate finish infused with lemon balm.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
In a flight of inexpensive Australian Merlot, this wine stood out for its density and concentration. Which is not to say it’s a big wine, but it does offer plenty of mixed berry fruit and hints of chocolate in a medium-bodied wine. Picks up some savory olive and coffee notes on the mouthwatering finish.

Crafted to be very broadly appealing, but well done in that category, this bottling shows ginger, toffee and malted milk scents followed by watermelon candy and fig flavors. Medium-to-full bodied, with a hint of sweetness and a finish on fast fade. Drink up.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This medium-bodied Merlot seems a little jammy on the nose, but in the mouth it shows a modicum of structure to go with its moderately intense cassis and chocolate flavors. It's even reasonably long on the finish.

This is pretty good for an inexpensive Cabernet, blending chocolate and ripe cassis notes with just a bit of herbaceousness. The tannins are supple but present, making it approachable now and a decent match with burgers or steaks. Imported by McWilliam's Hanwood Estate.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is jammy and almost bubble gum-like upfront, with candied cherry flavors and very little tannic structure. Still, the fruit is bold, balanced by crisp acids, and the wine would pair fine with pizza or burgers.

It's familiarly New World all the way—gold color, apple and butterscotch aromas, the toast-cream-yellow stone fruit trifecta in the mouth. But when it's done well, it's done well. Bonus when it's a value price.
