Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Round and fruity with fully ripe, even sweet flavors of pear and honeydew melon. It’s a little yeasty also, with a somewhat beery finish. But overall it’s a fine bottle for simple sipping.

This is a light, spritzy wine; it could almost qualify as frizzante. The light citrus flavors start out fine, then become rough and vegetal.

Melrose Viognier - 2006

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is soft and almost weightless, with no aromas and a midpalate that drops into a black hole. It’s not that there are any off flavors; just that the search for flavor is, to put it bluntly, fruitless. Rare to find a wine with such a gaping hole in the middle.

Melrose Chardonnay - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Round and fruity, this mixes berries and hints of tropical fruit. Acids are just enough, and there is little or no trace of a new barrel. Quaffable and light.

Melrose Pinot Noir - 2008

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Very tart and acidic, this shows cranberry fruit flavors and the barest suggestion of cured meat. Fruit-powered, sharp and quite young, this might substitute for a cru Beaujolais more than something from Spain.

Melrose Tempranillo - 2008

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fruity and tart, with cranberry and not quite ripe wild blackberry flavors. The acidity is front and center here, the fruit second, and the wine fades away with no additional complexity in the finish. A pleasant, fruity, no-frills red.

The blend is half Dolcetto, 40% Baco Noir, and the rest a mix of Tempranillo and Syrah. Creative, to be sure. What emerges is a rustic, fruity, forward, simple and slightly gamy red, the sort of wine that might be served in a carafe in a Mediterranean cafe. Light and fruity, with a spicy kick to the finish.

Melrose Red Blend - 2008

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Cofermented with 3% Viognier, this distinctive Syrah just skirts the edge of ripeness. It brings cranberry and pomegranate fruit flavors, etched with licorice and mint and coffee beans, supported by firm acids. There’s a nice balance and penetrating fruit that gives the finish some length and interest.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Estate-grown and fruit-driven, this lush, pear-flavored Pinot Gris is dotted with pretty cinnamon and allspice highlights. Forward and nicely balanced, it has the texture and weight to handle rich sauces, much like a big Chardonnay, but without all the new oak.

Very spicy, with a tart entry and some sour cherry fruit. Elegant, feminine and plush through the middle.
