Despite a hefty alcohol of 15.4%, this Pinot feels lilting and charming, a wine of early drinkability. Rich in gentle cherry, black raspberry and cinnamon-clove flavors, it shows the winemakers’ liking for stem inclusion in the earthy, sage-and herb notes, and a salty, peat moss quality in the finish, like a fine single-malt Scotch. Thoroughly enjoyable now.

Superextracted and ripe, a big candy bar of a wine filled with sweet peach liqueur and nectarine flavors. Spicy oak adds additional sweet, sappy vanilla and oak elements. Big and lush, but could use more balance and harmony.

Here’s a big, rich, full-bodied and rather extracted wine, made in a powerful style. It shows a gamut of well-ripened cherry, blackberry pie, licorice, grilled wild mushroom and forest floor components, with significant tannins. Give it 4–6 years to hit its stride.

Just sings in the glass. So clean, crisp, elegant, the real deal. Cool-climate Pinot at it most succulent. Brims with raspberry, cherry and tart cranberry fruit, with notes of sweet sandalwood, white pepper and dusty pie spices, like cinnamon and clove. Wonderful now and for the next few years.

Very fine, dry and complex, a wine of considerable power. Shows intricately layered flavors of wild forest blackberries, cherries, sassafras, anise, grilled mushroom, charred meat bone and Asian spices, wrapped into significant, but ultra-refined, tannins. High-toned and classic. Now through 2013.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Extraordinarily rich and ripe, if a little high in alcohol. Shows great extract, with masses of squashed, gooey cherries, raspberries and oodles of spices. Feels opulent and dramatic, with smoky oak adding to the complex, almost feral layers. So much going on in the glass. Just gorgeous now, and should hold and develop over the next 4–5 years.

Combines a delicate, floral lightness with a potent intricacy to produce a wine of vast intellectual interest. Dry and somewhat tannic, and crisp in tangy acidity, this small-production Pinot features tiers of tart red cherries, rosehip tea, cola, mint, lavender, anise and pepper, edged with the honeyed sweetness of smoky, glazed oak. A tremendous achievement, and the wine of the vintage.

From a cool site comes this wiry, tannic Syrah. It’s pretty astringent now, a bone-dry, peppery wine with wild blackberry, herb, violet and pepper flavors finishing with a stony, chalky minerality. Cellaring for a few years should soften the edges.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Full-bodied, dry and complex, with spicy, stem-infused herb and earthy textures and flavors covering the underlying notes of blackberries, plums, raw meat, anise and smoke. Distinctive and compelling, and the considerable tannins strongly suggest aging. Now-2014.

Big, ripe, in-your-face Chard here, as gooey as a fruity custard. Almost a dessert wine, it stays just this side of dry, offering huge flavors of lemon drop mousse, pineapple jam, guava, papaya, golden mango and spicy oak. This is a dramatic, show-me-off Chardonnay.
