Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Built for the cellar, with its tannins and oak dominating. Bone dry and taut, there’s little relief now through the rasping finish. The betting is on the chewy core of cherry and blackberry fruit, but a well-marbled steak will make for a good pairing.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Oaky, butterscotch scents pour forth from this orange-colored wine. Flavors center around nutty, orangey nuances, with the wood notes reassserting themselves on the finish. The 18% alcohol is barely noticeable in this intense and unique dessert wine that bears a resemblance to some sherries and tawnies.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Oak and tropical fruit are highlights of the aroma, which also includes buttercream, vanilla and a leesy streak. Flavors are dominated by toasty oak, with butterscotch, vanilla custard, and crème brûlée wrapped around a solid core of apple. For fans of big-boned, sweet Chards.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Rich, dense and cool, with an overt menthol streak. The fat, tangy fruit has a cedar edge and also a pronounced piercing quality. Round, voluminous, tannic and in general quite big. Now the wood is a bit heavy-handed. A year or two on its side should help it along.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Solidly in the Merryvale style, featuring exuberantly ripe fruit and lavish oak balanced with acidity. The intense flavors veer toward spicy pears, pineapple and white peach, and last through a long finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A touch of stemminess along with creamy oak and vanilla. Very round up front, but somewhat hollow in the middle. As a result, not even the extraripe, almost late-harvest style can rescue this entirely. A panel-rated wine: Some reviewers were quite keen on it while others were less impressed.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A bit peppery and herbal, but with plenty of crisp, tangy fruit at its core. The overall impression is of a wine that’s a bit rustic and rough but solid and well made.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Just delicious, this wine shows its pedigree from some of the best vineyards in the valley, including Merryvale’s St. Helena estate. Dry and rich in firm but refined tannins, it offers elaborate flavors of blackberries, blueberries and cherries, while 70% new oak adds layers of buttered toast and caramel. Great for drinking now with the best meats and cheeses you can find.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
An easy to like Merlot, with the weight of Cabernet. Smooth, ripely soft tannins, lots of smoky new oak, and true varietal flavors of ripe cherries, black raspberries, cocoa and vanilla. Finishes soft and fruity.

Quite rich, this Merlot shows real Napa character in the ripe fruit and quality of the tannins. It brims with blackberry, currant, cherry and herb flavors, and feels well-structured and distinguished in the mouth. Best now.
