Fruhburgunder is an early ripening strain of Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir) grown in Germany's northerly Ahr - one of the coolest wine growing districts in the world. Even more curious, four fifths of the wines made in the Ahr are red - rare for Germany! The varietal's been described as sort of like a very light Burgundy, and I have to agree, although this one has a little bit of syrupy sweetness on the finish from the oak that's definitely not classy. However, overall it's a pleasant, will o the wisp sort of red. It's very pale ruby in color with an extraordinarily fair pink-orange rim; aromas are of powdered sugar-coated raspberries, clove, orange rind, hazelnut and brown sugar. Light body reminiscent of a Beaujolais villages; moderate acid and flavors of cinnamon stick, cranberry juice, dried cherries and mocha.
