This extraordinary vintage of Cerequio offers impressive harmony and balance. Every element is in place and the wood and spice notes blend seamlessly with red currant and licorice. The intensity of the wine is also noteworthy as is its firmness and the powerful impact it makes.

The Asili cru (one of the best performing in Barbaresco) produces a delicate expression of Nebbiolo that is not without power and intensity. This wine has beautiful aromatic layers of black currant, plum, resin and powdered licorice with a firm, drying finish. Drink after 2015.

Nectarine and lemon dance all around and straight through the middle of this fruity, drink-me style of Gavi. It’s not a tight, dry wine--it’s more like a burst of fruit salad, one comprised of nectarine and lemon, but also melon, pineapple and lime. Well balanced and food friendly.

The name Triumviratum is difficult to pronounce and impossible to read on the label. No worries: this is amazing wine and that’s all you need to know. It delivers an endless parade of aromas that span from black currant and licorice to leather, ginger, cured meat and Bresaola. The mouthfeel is compact, and extraordinarily intense. Drink after 2015.

Albarossa is a cross between two grape varieties, Barbera and Nebbiolo, that offers plump, fruity density and a smooth, soft close. Along the way are highlights of bright acidity and certain tannic firmness.

This is a feel-good Barbaresco that invites good meals and good company. There is a festive element to the vibrant quality of the fruit and the wine’s tonic, but firm mouthfeel. You’ll get aromas of licorice, black currant, maple syrup and rose hip.

Lean in color, Chiarlo’s Barbera d’Asti is an easy drinking red with zesty acidity that is perfect for cutting through cheesy, gorgonzola-based appetizers. Aromas include wild berry and blue flowers and the wine taste firm but fruity in the mouth.

Tortoniano is a fabulous wine for first-time drinkers of Barolo. Its price is reasonable for the category and the wine offers those buoyant and direct aromas of cola and currants that are so typical of Nebbiolo. The mouthfeel is drying and firm and the wine is ready to drink within the next two years.

This very talented Piedmontese winemaker makes wines as good or better than the attractive packages they come in. Countacc is dark ruby in color, with a full nose of dark berries, spices and tar. Medium-bodied with cherry and leather flavors, and a smooth, long finish. Will get better in two to four years.

Cola, coffee and cherry aromas lead off this barrique-aged wine that features lots of intensity and style. Yes, it’s slathered throughout with spicy but smooth vanilla oak, but that oak works wonders with the fruit. The finish tosses up coffee and superior length. As a whole, it’s racy and refined, with nuances of bacon and smoke.
