Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
At nearly 80% Merlot and the remainder Malbec, this is a medium-bodied red possessed of bright, vibrant cassis fruit with chocolate and herb overtones. It finishes firm without being hard or tough, so it may be consumed now and over the next 5–7 years.

This is a rich, sumptuous red wine. It looks, smells and tastes opulent. Ripe, forward berry flavors, wrapped in considerable oak, taste full and long, and the wine flatters with thick, velvety but fine tannins. The finish is a wonder, long and intricate. The aftertaste lasts for a full minute. It’s wonderful now, but should age effortlessly for many years. A blend of Bordeaux varieties and Syrah.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Mills Reef’s Reserve Sauvignon Blanc stays true to the Hawke’s Bay style, with ripe fruit notes that recall nectarine and passion fruit, medium body and a zesty finish reminiscent of fresh citrus. Drink it over the next year.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A chunky, soft wine with a strong wood influence, very much in keeping with the winery’s style. This 51% Merlot-49% Malbec blend features a smoky, cedary, vanilla-laden bouquet, dark fruit flavors, supple tannins and a smooth finish.

This mouthfilling Sauvignon Blanc is a step away from the rest of the over-the-top grassy Sauvignons from New Zealand. It’s partially barrel fermented, yielding powerful fruit with a subtle touch of oak. Best Buy.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Quite grassy and curranty, with that special gooseberry aroma. Young and aggressive in the mouth, with high acidity. But has that delightful New Zealand fruitiness that flatters the palate. Bone dry, with high extract, it’s a pretty wine, and affordable.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The characteristic Sauvignon pungency of grapefruits and gooseberries has been smoothed over by barrel fermentation, resulting in a creamy, vanilla overlay that glides easily across the palate. Bright acidity shines through on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From Mere Road Vineyard, this blend of 72% Cabernet and 28% Merlot packs a lot of flavor into a broad, expansive wine that avoids the overt green character possessed by so many of its brethren. Rich, plummy fruit is graced by chocolate and smoke notes from French oak.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Almost more of a white Graves style than a traditional New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, featuring a kiss of French oak and ample body without any overt pungency. Ripe melon and fig flavors easily accompany slightly grassy notes, accented by grapefruit on the finish. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Here you have a massively constituted wine joined to well-charred oak that results in an enormously rich, satisfying and, more importantly, balanced sip. The fruit and berry flavors are hugely extracted, the tannins gentle but complex, the acidity near perfect. It all adds up to a young bruiser. If you must drink it now, have with rich foods like well-marbled beef or lamb.
