Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A Bordeaux blend from inland Mendocino, with an interesting aroma. It’s like raspberry and peppermint, or cotton candy with a dollop of smoky oak and vanilla. That minty, cedary flavor persists in the month. It’s nice to taste such high acidity in a California wine, but the eccentric flavors are puzzling. —S.H.

Organically grown, with a woody, peachy smell. It tastes of peaches and apples, although citric acidity gives it a lemony feel. Finishes crisp, with a Meyer lemon flavor. Good drinking, and the oak barely shows. —S.H.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A different blend from the Sanel, this one marries Petite Sirah to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It smells hot and overripe. There are some berry flavors, but it’s tannic, acidic, and scours the mouth with heat and roughness. It will probably mellow with age, but now it’s rustic. —S.H.

A ripe and fruity wine, with quite lavish oak that lends toasty, nutty notes. Drinks very spicy and rich. Clean and vibrant, with some pedigree in the pure fruit and fancy trimmings. Best Buy.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
From 40-year-old vines, this is an odd wine, with cherry cough-medicine, herbal aromas and a sharp taste. The acidity seems very high, making the wine tart, and there isn’t enough berry flavor to offset it. If you can get past the rustic nature, it’s okay. —S.H.

A restrained nose with some toast aromas broadens with airing to reveal plenty of berry and vanilla notes. Verges on fat, but manages to keep itself in check. A vanilla-berry bomb that provides hedonistic pleasure.
