A bigger, chewier, deliciously made version of Miraflores estate bottling, the Herbert Vineyard is dry and smooth, a Zin of blackberry and pepper notes throughout with a finish that could go on for days. Made by Marco Cappelli, who bought the Frank Herbert Vineyard in the town of Fair Play in 2002.

Here’s a Merlot-like Zinfandel, in terms of the silky mouthfeel, the elegance of the tannins, and the cherry and currant flavors that have a flowery, violet finish. But the black pepper, clove and nutmeg spices are all Zin. Drink this lovely wine now.

Firm tannins and fine acidity give the structure to this ripely extracted Syrah. It’s smoky and sweet in smoky oak, blackberry jam, blueberry, milk chocolate and pepper flavors. Drink now with a char-broiled steak.

Miraflores bring a Merlot-style balance to this Zin. It’s dry and complex and likeable now for its array of wild berry, Asian spice, teriaki beef and black pepper flavors that last so long on the finish. A near-perfect Foothills Zin at a fair price.

Very ripe, with chocolatey flavors of cherries, mulberries, anise, black pepper and cedar. The tannins are as pure and refined as they come, but the wine could be a little crisper. Drink now.

Give this young wine some time in the cellar to shed its baby fat. It’s rich and slightly sweet in raspberries, cherries, cotton candy, mocha and vanilla wafer flavors, tucked into firm tannins.

A lovely way to enter into the Miraflores world, a Zin from El Dorado that’s smooth and full of all the blackberry one could want, but most noticeable of all is the pepper that tingles the tongue throughout but particularly on the finish.

Fine, crisp acidity makes this Viognier bracing, but it’s too honey-sweet in jammy apricots, peaches and pears. If you like your white wines on the sugary side, it’s for you.

This high-alcohol Zin is robust and full-bodied, with exuberant wild berry, leather, spice, carob and oak flavors that are totally dry. Plus, it has that hard-to-define quality of terroir.
