Fresh grass and hay lend a slight sweetness to wheat notes on the nose. As is the case with other area 2003 Rieslings, the mouthfeel on this one is full, not racy, as were last year’s wines. The palate offers yellow stone fruit and citrus flavors buried under a heavy layer of rock. By the finish, fresh lemon flavors are back at the fore.

Though there’s a base of sweet, rich yellow fruit at this wine’s heart, what’s more prevalent here are garden-fresh grass, or pea shoot notes, from nose through to the palate. Medium-weight, with a viscous mouthfeel.

Restrained and medium-bodied in the mouth, this wine’s always of reliably good quality, and this year’s no exception. Plum fruit and chunky meat-and-molasses notes on the nose resurface on the palate, where they wear a heavy coat of chalky tannins. Tasty and elegant.

A soft, ripe, excellent Shiraz, and drinkable even at this early age. Licorice stands out on the palate, under which mixed plums forge a solid foundation. Finishes, appropriately enough, with black pepper.

Another Mitchell red that’s drinkable even in its infancy, this Cab has soft but approachable tannins, and a great bouquet of pure plum and grape fruit. The palate shows black currant, mostly, dusted with pastry flour. Yum.
