Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Although a very good wine, this is a bit disappointing coming from winemaker Ben Glaetzer. Blackberry preserve flavors are soft and full-bodied without being especially rich or deep, with hints of vanilla and fresh grasses. Finishes fresh, with tart berry flavors.

A surprising misstep from this fine winery and consulting winemaker Ben Glaetzer. The characteristic Mitolo/Glaetzer creamy-textured tannins are there, but the flavors are a bit simple and grapy, marked by peppery, leafy notes. It is awfully young, so maybe it will pull together in a another few months.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Full-bodied and lush, this hedonistic Shiraz easily hides its elevated alcohol level (15%) behind layers of concentrated plummy fruit. Hints of coffee, herbs and spices impart complexity, so this isn’t a simple fruit bomb. Long and focused on the finish, with well-concealed structure that keeps the fruit from becoming jammy. Drink now–2015.

Made from grapes dried passito-style, this is an excellent Cab. Well balanced with soft tannins, it shows earth and focused blackberry aromas, and very juicy blackberry and plum fruit. Pretty, unique and worth seeking out.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This vintage of the Reiver seems mintier than others, and at times the mint seemed a dominant feature of this wine, which otherwise offers jammy berry fruit and chocolate aromas and flavors. At 15% abv, it’s not a shy wine, but neither is it as richly textured as might be expected. Drink it 2013–2020.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The partially dried grapes that are used in this wine give it an intensely aromatic and unique character that resembles cherry liqueur, with sprigs of green herbs for garnish. It’s medium-bodied, with an easy, supple style that fades a bit rapidly on the finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This brooding beast starts with scents of dark chocolate and coffee, then adds plenty of fruit in the form of blueberries and blackberries on the rich, chewy palate. Despite the wine’s considerable heft and density of fruit, there’s enough spicy complexity and a surprising degree of elegance to the long, tongue-tingling finish. Drink now–2015.

Nitpicking Europhiles might find this a touch warm on the palate, but it’s a full-bodied, lusty expression of Australian Shiraz, with fruit that kaleidoscopically moves from raspberries to black cherries and on to blackberries, all the while graced with hints of peppery spice that echo elegantly on the long finish. Drink 2010–2020.

At only 10% alcohol, this Vermentino actually comes across a bit Riesling-like, with green apple and citrus flavors and a lingering, crisp finish. Drink now.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Consulting winemaker Ben Glaetzer has fashioned a reasonably full-bodied Cab for the Mitolo family, one that combines some superripe, verging on raisined, elements with hints of tobacco and herbs. Mint, cassis and chocolate round out the palate, finishing softly tannic. Drink now–2010.
