This wine was drunk together with the 1978 in the same large format; a deeper, richer nose with more earth tones and more profoundly focused aromas, more powerful than the ’78 but not as soft or enticing, earthen with strong truffle and spice notes, very “Bordeaux” with hints of lead pencil and cassis, sweet fruit, seems not as fresh as the ’78 though, but more complex; sweet and earthen flavors, this is definitely more Bordelais than most wines from this region; a different style of winemaking than is used today, this wine has strong terroir with complex flavors of spices and mint, sweet black fruits, dry granular tannins; long sweet finish, its only fault being that it is not as fresh as the ’78, but in every other way its equal. Typical of the Mondavi wines, this has a wonderful and aromatic nose, quite perfumed with varied floral motifs, ripe black fruit, chocolate; sweet fruit in the front of the mouth, earthy and spicy flavors; a bit depleted at the end, losing a lot of its vibrancy in the glass; definitely time to drink this. In this format, the wine was fresh and vibrant with a beautiful sparkling claret color; a wonderfully enticing soft and rich nose, ripe and very smooth with layered aromas of caramel and chocolate, truffles and earth combining with a deep sweetness, green herbs and eucalyptus; sweet but balanced in the mouth; small berry flavors, sweet blackberries dominant; smooth and silky; beautiful citrus fruit; dry tannins still very much evident but subdued now; long finish with dry citrus notes; this has been one of my favorite wines from this property and was so again this evening. (18.5/20)
