This by-the-glass performer is spicy and decent, with some oak-driven maple aromas coming up late. It’s more or less a simple fruit ball that delivers ample raspberry and cherry flavors. Spice on the finish provides some needed character. —M.S.

Upright, with notes of cinnamon candy on a nose dominated by bright red fruit. Quite clean and free flowing, with snappy strawberry and cherry flavors resting comfortably on a fresh, acid-driven palate. The opposite of dead weight; this is a lively wine.

A value stalwart, this 100% Sangiovese blends leather, spice and tobacco with sour cherries on a lithe frame. Finishes with cinnamon, clove and orange-peel notes.

Here’s a cheerful and well-priced blend of Sangiovese (85%), Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with good density and concentration backed by aromas of spice, blackberry and wet earth. The wine (packaged in a screw cap bottle which is rare to see on red wines from Italy) is fresh and clean and imparts fresh berry flavors.

Coffee and chocolate open the nose of this Tuscan blend of Sangiovese and 15% Merlot. The wine is inky and well concentrated with thick, chewy density and plump cherry notes. It represents a straightforward combination of fruit and spice and would pair with most meat and pasta dishes.

I didn't love this wine. It had a good nose to begin with; leather and black fruit. Unfortunately, it was a bit weak upon tasting. It actually was quite tart. This is a blend of Sangiovese, Cab Sauv, and Merlot. It was better after breathing awhile. Did not pair well with our fontina cheese and asparagus pizza.
