Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Even and light on its feet, this tasty wine presents a cedar, meat and cocoa-tinged nose. Soft for a Rioja, it reflects perhaps the light 1997 vintage, but neatly avoids the underripe green notes evident in so many of the year’s wines. One gripe: this lacks what I consider appropriate weight or substance for a wine designated Reserva. Forgiving that, it’s truly drinkable, with black plum and tar notes on the palate, and a modest but flavorful finish.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tasty tart fruit, leather and tobacco flavors in this taut, medium-weight wine are supported by quite racy acidity, rendering it somewhat astringent. The oak here, too, seems to bear heavily on rather light fruit. With tannins to lose, this may improve with age, filling out some, but will always be lean. Drink now–2006. —M.M.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Aromas of warm cedar planks, tobacco and mushroom turn more murky and leafy with air. Quite acidic, which is why the wine is still kicking and screaming. The fruit is slick and racy, while the finish is hot, fiery and bitter like espresso. Imported by W.J. Deutsch & Sons.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Smooth, savory and spicy, but with enough red-fruit character to ensure that it doesn’t taste dull. The palate offers orderly berry and pepper flavors, while it ends with vanilla and a hint of campfire. Juicy and fairly fresh, but a little thin and watery across the palate. Imported by W.J. Deutsch & Sons.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Creamy vanilla and apple aromas are not upheld on the poorly defined, watery palate. All you get in terms of flavor is citrus peel and some mineral. Not offensive or aggressive; but it leaves you bored. Imported by W.J. Deutsch & Sons.

Some caramel and candied fruit goes well with the flowery element on the bouquet. In the mouth, lime, peach and mineral run the show. After that comes a clean, light finish with just a hint of stone-fruit flavor. A good mouthfeel ensures that this will be a decent wine for trout caught during the summer.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Starts with appropriate earth, cherry and vanilla notes, which are followed by spicy cherry, cranberry and raspberry flavors. Shows red fruit in a more traditional style, while the finish is warm, a bit oaky, and ultimately quite fresh.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This mature wine shows a touch of brown at the edge and a handsome cedar, tobacco and herb nose. The finely tuned palate has good fruit-to-acid balance, and the tasty dried cherry and plum flavors are complemented by more cedar and tobacco. Lean and elegant, best drunk now through 2006. Editors’ Choice. —M.M.

Fresh smelling, with notes of green melon, apple, honey and minerals. It’s more simple than complex, with crisp apple and orange flavors and then a chunky, slightly pithy finish. For under $15 this is good, casual Albariño that won’t steer you wrong.

This basic Viura has a waxy nose with hints of mineral and banana. The palate deals tart apple and lemon juice, while the finish is tight and sharp. Needs salty, basics to pump it up, something like green olives.
