A fruit lover’s wine. Broad black cherry and leather aromas set up a smooth but hefty palate with deep berry flavors, spice and smoked meat. Rich but balanced, with a heaping of heavenly chocolate on the finish. A firm and structured wine with fine depth and distance.

Monteviejo, one of the Clos de los Siete wineries, has entered the unofficial “fun Malbec” category with Festivo, which has a stemmy, slightly burnt character that is present from start to finish. Along the way there are leathery black fruit flavors, herbal qualities and a good mouthfeel. Decent wine but decidedly herbal and stemmy.

Borderline heavy, with stewy black fruit aromas that turn savory then murky and gaseous. The palate has clacky acidity and flavors of sweet, roasted berry fruits. Lasting on the finish, with citric acidity that seems as though it was forced onto the wine. 50% Malbec with 30% Cabernet and 10% each Syrah and Merlot.

The question is how much oak can you handle? If you like a heavily toasted, resiny type of full-bodied Chardonnay, add two or three points. If you absolutely hate that style, then subtract a few points. For those of us in between, look for resiny, toasty, heavy aromas on top of a thick, chewy palate full of baked apple and tons of wood spice. One-dimensional but well made.

At first this seems over the top (it’s 15.8%). But give the wine time and you’ll find the ultimate presentation of ripeness, richness and depth. The flavors are thick and black, with chunky black plum, prune, syrup and more. But it’s also healthy and not flabby, with balance and a sense of being. Excellent if you like monster reds.

This is probably the best of the new line of Festivo wines from Monteviejo. The nose has a clean, fresh neutrality that serves it well, while the palate is bright and offers apricot and nectarine flavors. Turns more pithy on the finish, which is why we suggest that you drink it ASAP. Questionable value at $18.

Aromas of applesauce, lemon cake and lychee are probably the best part of the wine. In the mouth, it’s chunky and wan, with candied, sweet apple and melon flavors. Finishes heavy, and overall it seems to be on an early fade.

A wonderful wine from the Uco Valley of Mendoza that opens with fine fruit, richness and molten earth. The palate is big as they come but not hard and out of whack, and the flavors are an amalgam of rich black plum, berry fruit, fig paste and chocolate. Smoky and sultry on the back end, with mocha and coffee for finishing notes. Drink now through 2014.

Super concentrated yet holding its own after six years, this is one dark, oily beast of a Malbec. It's wall-to-wall in terms of saturated black fruit, and the chunky, tannic palate certainly gives you something to work on. Brawny on the finish and big and raisiny as a whole.
