This Chardonnay in a box is the equivalent of four regular bottles, but it’s not a very good wine. It’s ultradry and acidic, with unripe, vegetal flavors that just approach citrus fruits.

So what does ten bucks buy in Pinot Noir? A light-bodied wine with tart, green strawberry, cola and cranberry flavors, plenty of crisp acids and smooth tannins.

One of a rash of new and inexpensive statewide appellations as a result of the grape glut, this is a decent every sipper. It has berry flavors and is very dry and clean. Acids are out of proportion to the fruit, however, resulting in a peppery tartness.

Here’s your basic red wine, the kind drunk around the world. It has berry, earthy flavors, and is bone dry and acidic, with strong tannins. It’s a rustic, country-style wine, and you can gulp it down with your next pizza.

Riper than last year, and $2 more expensive, too, but gets the same score because it’s too sweet. Nice aromas of smoky currants, and some good, ripe blackberry flavors, but why did they keep so much sugar in?

A serviceable wine, with plummy berry flavors and some fairly rugged tannins, but on the whole it’s an easy sip. It’s also a bit on the sweet side.

A pleasing blend of plum, black cherry, smoke, berry and herb flavors, all couched in firm tannins. Toast and smoke frame the finish which is moderate in length and fairly spicy.
