Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This is the first Monticello Syrah I’ve had, and it’s a very impressive one. Grown in the cooler southern part of Napa Valley, it shows crisp acids and a peppery zest that make the blackberry, cherry and chocolate flavors extra enjoyable.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
For the past several years, Monticello has been quietly producing deliciously drinkable Syrahs. The ’05 is rich in cassis, cherry, mocha, violet, leather and spicy flavors, wrapped into a smooth, velvety texture.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The ’05 is a good wine, a little thin in peach and pineapple fruit, with a strong overlay of toasty, spice oak and a vanilla cream mouthfeel.

Monticello Chardonnay - 2005

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Starts off very oaky, with masses of sweet buttery char, crème brûlée and vanilla notes. What’s under all that? Delicious blackberry pie filling and polished cherry cola. Drinks voluptuously smooth, soft and slightly sweet. Best now and for a couple of years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Rutherford vineyard has been the source of well-regarded Cabs for Monticello and the ’04 is the latest. Compact and ageworthy, it shows well-ripened blackberry, cherry and cola flavors that have been generously oaked. The tannins are firm and sticky now, suggesting development. Best 2008–2012.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Deeply scented, a big, powerhouse Cabernet grown on the Rutherford bench. It’s dense, chewy and meaty, showing blackberry jam, blueberry, chocolate and sweet smoky oak. The tannins are thick and furry, as befits such a young, ageable wine. Hold until 2013, and it should develop through 2019.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The Jefferson Cuvée has been a good bet in Napa Cab over the years, showing elegance and power, but also balance. The ’05, which contains a splash of Syrah, is rich in blackberry and dark chocolate flavors, and is made more interesting by the texture, which includes fine acidity and perfectly ripened tannins. Not an ager, but a wine to drink over the next six years.

From the winery’s estate vineyards in the cooler southern part of Napa Valley, this Pinot is dry and silky. The cherry, raspberry, tea, cola and oak flavors have an herbal edge of rosemary and sage.
