Montinore Pinot Gris - 1998

At almost 6% residual sugar, this is almost a dessert wine, perhaps best served with foie gras or a cheese course. The aromas and flavors combine elements of preserved lemon rinds, ripe pears and apricots in a rich, sweet, oily wine.

Peach and butter open, with thin grapefruit and lemon on the palate. Notes of lychee and toast throughout. On the palate, there is a slight spritziness. Clean and citrusy on the short finish. —K.F.

Melon and citrus aromas get this soft, ripe and round wine going. The palate is full and plump, with bold citrus and tropical flavors and a welcome textural creaminess. The finish is smooth and supple, and as a whole this wine covers all the bases while showing itself to be a more than capable food accompaniment.

Tastes like black cherry cola. The ripe, lush style flirts with oxidation, loads in the vanilla flavors, and finishes with a burst of heat. Needs the mellowing influence of food to show its best.

Montinore Pinot Noir - 2003

The reserve is a bigger version of the regular Pinot, with more heat, more tannin, more bite. Sharp, hot and acidic, with green tannins that seem to thin out the finish.

Opens with a sharp, bitter scent, which might generously be called juniper, herb and pine. But in the mouth it remains tough and quite tannic. It’s hard, chewy and roughhewn, showing little in the way of fruit. —P.G.

Bracing and tart, with mixed citrus flavors suggesting lime, lemon and a trace of pineapple. There’s a slightly bitter, lemon-rind edge that gives the wine some extra definition and should work wonders with halibut or swordfish.

A good effort, clearly varietal with a mix of grapefruit and floral flavors. Medium intensity, the fruit is penetrating and tart, and the floral scents have a somewhat soapy character, which is not unpleasant. The wine is technically off-dry, but really shows little sweetness.

Montinore Gewürztraminer - 2005

Scents are spicy and herbal, with notes of fresh cut apple, tart pear and citrus. Light and dilute, it seems to disappear quickly in the mouth, without the weight or ripe fruit flavors that many Oregon Pinot Gris can display.
