Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet and very aromatic nose, this wine just shouts candied lemons from the glass, lots of honey tones are also there with an underlying spicy and herbal backdrop; sweet and elegant in the mouth; an interesting contrast of soft flavors in a firm base; wonderful freshness and balance, but with a real pronounced acidic core that skirts disaster and avoids becoming searing; the strength of the fruit wins, though, and the wine finishes with a long, sweet finish that has elements of French hard candy about it. (19/20)

Sweet and ripe nose, lots of lemony scents, vanilla, herbs, a nose with attitude, but refined; sweet and lemony in the mouth; layers of flavor and deep lemony structure; touches of herbs and spices, caraway and white pepper; floral and intense; long finish with sophisticated flavors. (19/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Intense nose, spicy and rich, ripe fruit, buttery, lemon grass aromas; sweet in the front of the mouth, but I found the wine to be austere and with a higher level of acidity than I like, making the wine very aggressive in the mouth; the fruit is nicely matched to subtle levels of minerals and shale that create a nice complex environment; long finish, just aggressive. (17.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Spicy and sweet nose with definite cookie dough aromas, but also somewhat thick and advanced with a hint of overripeness; sweet but flat in the mouth; there is something wrong with this bottle as I’ve had much better, and it can’t have aged that much since I last tasted this wine; there is a definite taste of wet wood in this bottle; short finish that drops off the table quickly. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
This opens with a wonderful classic nose of sour cabbage and sauerkraut, then picks up more sweetness in showing some ripe fruit with a pleasant touch of fresh white pepper; this is a big wine that makes a statement right off the bat; sweet and ripe fruit at the front of the mouth mixed with exotic herbs and spices; smooth and rich; then picks up more lemon and citrus notes, but never too much; very balanced throughout; a wonderfully long finish with lemon peel flavors that linger in the mouth. Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Spicy and exotic nose, interesting mix of aromas picking up highlights of asparagus, exotic spices, acetic acid, but also deep and rich; sweet and rich in the mouth, loaded with exotic spice flavors; there is lots of fruit, although it is somewhat constrained still; obviously more to come; big and powerful in the mouth showing all of the depth of a grand cru; long finish, loaded with flavor; this is a big Montrachet that will show more in a few years. (18.5/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Complex and deep nose with layers of aromas that mingle and merge, sweet, herbed fruit that moves to salt water taffy, paraffin, cookie dough; sweet and smooth in the mouth with smooth ripe fruit; this wine has lots of heft; quite silky and seductive despite its youth; at the same time there is pent up power as evidenced in the lemony acidity that is at the heart of the wine; long balanced finish; this is gorgeous. (19.5/20) Tasted again later in the year with Rob and Linda Caine and Bryan and Ann Jacobowski with consistent notes; this is a wonderful wine with a long future.

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Focused nose, laser-sharp but a bit hard, clean and fresh, floral, and defined by the aromas of white pepper; tight and closed at this time, but shows real class; reluctant to give up its flavors right now, but there is bitter lemon peel and mineral lime; more sweetness emerges with more time in the glass; sweet lemons; deep and focused. (18/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Very aromatic nose, loaded with green herbs, powerful yet lacy at the same time, layered, lemony scents, touch of lemon oil, deep aromas but young now and not yet showing its full character; sweet and elegant in the mouth, complex and powerful; loads of fresh lemon juice but not overly citric; great balance; more nuance emerges with time in the glass, yielding up candied lemons, spices; big finish with hints of earth and wonderful dry edges in the mouth that focus the wine toward the center; classic in the making. (19/20)

Expert NoteDecember 19, 2005
Sweet and ripe nose, much in the same vein as the 2001, complex aromas of lemon peel, cookie dough, confectioner’s sugar, hints of vinyl and rubber, earth, herbs; lots of mineral flavors in the front of the mouth, gradually replaced by sour lemon candy, lemon peel, and grapefruit flavors; lots of ripeness, giving the wine a smooth silkiness that lasts through the finish; quite intense, focused, and memorable. (19/20)
