Chocolate, a hint of mint, spice and black fruit make this a true-smelling Syrah. The flavors run a little bit red, i.e. raspberry and red plum, and the finish offers a smack of oak along with dried fruit flavors. More of an acid-based, lively style.

The nose is almost salsa-like, with the pepper and tomato aromas that come up from the glass. But if you can get past the herbal gatekeeper, there’s a nice mouthfeel and spicy fruit. A different path in Carmenère, one that requires a second, maybe a third taste to appreciate.

A round wine with aromatics of tobacco, mint, black fruit and coffee. In the mouth, there’s a plethora of juicy black cherry and plum, followed by a wholesomeness that really earns the wine its stars. A very good Chilean red with its own identity.

Dark and meaty, with a fat nose full of oozing black fruit, coffee and mocha. Quite muscular and ready, with plum, raspberry and full tannins. Yes, it’s a tiny bit overdone on the finish, where the acidity and tannins are potent. But it’s got the depth and fruit quality to rate high.

Made from Riesling, this wine was mildly affected by botrytis, yet it’s still lively and zippy. Honey, butterscotch and banana notes on the nose play opening act to papaya and mango flavors. Full and flavorful, and fairly well balanced for the style.

Opaque and thick, yet despite its mammoth proportions the wine is lacking. It smells sweaty, while the flavor profile is sour at the core, with only modest surrounding fruit. Finishes starchy.

Rich boysenberry and plum aromas kick off this muscular, well-made Merlot. Flavors of dark berries and equally rich plum fruit are on the money, as is the full mouthfeel that’s propped up by good tannins and a hint of oak.

This 100% Sauvignon Blanc dessert bottling is fermented in new French oak, and is aged one year on lees. Rich honey, peach and nectarine fruit could have rendered this wine too sweet and sloppy; instead, its light, gravelly texture keeps it from being too cloying. Honey, mustard grains and light talc on the nose, and a nutty, crème brulee-like finish add elegance where, again, candy could otherwise have reigned.

The thin nose carries the scent of chlorine and a bit of pickle barrel. On the tongue, there’s some vegetal character and pedestrian red fruit. Even the finish seems mildly pickled. Mouthfeel is the wine’s best feature, but it can’t overcome the odd flavors of pickle and the tang those flavors bring along.

A very tight and meaty wine, with lots of vitality and plenty of rich liqueur-like characteristics. The juicy palate burst with cassis and black cherry, while the finish is equally full force. Clearly Pablo Morandé has found something by mixing Syrah and Cabernet.
