Robust and sexy, with smoke, leather and pure berry and plum aromas that make for a sensational bouquet. The palate is up to the precedent set by the nose, as the cherry and cola flavors are outright lovely. For what you get, this is almost a value. It shows us what that Muga can do in a great vintage.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
After many years of singing the praises of Muga’s rosé, this vintage seems lacking and sour. The nose is short and quiet, while the palate delivers lean, citric flavors and a sharp, scouring finish. Whets the whistle, but doesn’t put a smile on your face.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Very light in body, color and aromas. The nose is punchy and a bit sharp, and so is the palate, which offers crisp, bracing acids to highlight zesty, lean nectarine and tangerine flavors. Quite linear and citric, but experience with this wine says it shows best with food.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Among the world’s bruising, full-bodied wines, Torre Muga is a flag bearer. This vintage offers cola, pepper, coffee and sweet blackberry fruit aromas, and the palate is tannic, acidic, grabby and full of life. Flavors of blackberry, dark plum and spice are pure as they come, with espresso on the finish. Let this sit another few years to allow the fierce tannins to mellow; best 2012–2017.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Full-bodied and pushing up against raisiny and baked, but it draws back at the final moment and competently settles into its richness and ripeness. Generous and dark in the mouth, with meaty tannins and flavors of black raspberry, plum and mocha. On the finish, there’s a hint of fresh tomato to go with vanilla and leftover berries. Drink now through 2013.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Sweet, ripe and full, which is pretty much the Muga style. One whiff tells you a lot: there’s nice plum and cherry, with depth. The finish lingers for a while, delivering vanilla and ample wood. This is so easy to like, and equally easy to drink.

Muga Tempranillo Blend - 1999

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
At first the wine seems to tip in favor of oak over substance; the nose is slightly lemony and caramelized. But as it airs out and opens up you get some juiciness but even more bruising roasted fruit. Tight and aggressive on the finish, with more than enough wood spice. Still youthful despite its 1996 birthdate.

One of Rioja’s unique old-school reds is lean, tangy and herbal, with dry plum and prune aromas as well as some dill and rubber. Piquant cherry and tobacco carry the peppy palate, while the finish is warm and lengthy. Quite a throwback, but with an appealing taste and class.

Deep and earthy, and packing more than a punch. This is big-time modern Rioja in brash form. The nose is gorgeous, dealing milk chocolate and fresh soil. The palate is a tight blend of tannins, acids and zesty flavors. Big and hedonistic for sure, but you’ll love the plum, pepper and espresso flavors. Still feverishly tannic; hold at least until 2005.

An unusual Cava in that it’s from one of Rioja’s top makers of red wines. Made from the local Viura with a touch of Malvasia, it features nice apple, citrus and herb aromas followed by orange, lime, apple and tarragon flavors. Clean, quick and light on the finish. No complaints.
