This plump and fruit-driven Barbaresco offers nuances of ripe cherry and forest berry backed by lingering tones of licorice, vanilla, dark chocolate and clove. The wine is distinguished by a precise and focused mouthfeel that is shaped by acidity and firm tannins.

Rio Sordo is acknowledged as a top cru, and Walter Musso has struck gold in 1999. Toasty hints of cedar blend harmoniously with succulent cherries, picking up notes of cured meat and vanilla. Long and richly textured on the finish, this should be approachable young, yet age well. Drink 2005–2015.

Dense and meaty at first; with air, purer fruit scents emerge, along with vanilla highlights. The fruit really sings on the palate, with luscious, lipsmacking black cherries captivating the tastebuds. Finishes slightly tart, like berry zinger tea.

Musso’s Pora is slightly less intense compared to the estate’s Rio Sordo cru expression, but it’s also very refined and less obvious than the latter. There’s dimension and depth here in the form of forest berry, toasted nut, coffee and pristine notes of spice and clove. The wine is bright and fresh with solid tannins on the close.
