Made in a bold, fruit-driven style, the 2007 Pinot Noir from Nautilus places black cherry fruit front and center, surrounding it with just enough cola, mushroom and gentle spice to make for pleasing complexity. Acids and tannins are a bit firmer than most Marlborough Pinots, so try pairing it with roast lamb or beef.

This medium-bodied Pinot Noir is plump on the palate, yet angular on the finish, giving it a slightly disjointed countenance. Perhaps the wine, which is otherwise pleasantly endowed with black cherry fruit and scorched cedar, is simply at a difficult stage.

Like a fairway-splitting drive in golf, this wine is just what the masses want: It’s full of grapefruit, passion fruit, gooseberry and citrus rind. The acidity, however, is pounding, so the finish might sweat your tongue a bit, thereby yielding a juicy mouthfeel. Overall, it starts well and then fades a bit.

A nice surprise, the Nautilus Pinot offers a silky smooth texture allied to lush flavors of black cherries and cocoa. There’s even a touch of underbrush thrown in for additional complexity. While the price isn’t low enough to warrant a “Best Buy” commendation, it’s more fairly priced than much of its competition.

A fine effort from this Marlborough producer, showing delicate touches of roasted nuts alongside citrus and apple aromas, then riper notes of white peaches on the palate. It’s medium to full in body, with a creamy texture and a long finish. Drink now–2014.

Near-perfect balance, with a modest 13.5% alcohol, residual sugar of 3.5g/L, and crisp acids. Add citrus and peach flavors and a long, clean finish, and you’ve got a heck of a nice wine.

Slightly confected strawberry and cherry fruit on the nose segue easily into flavors that trend darker—toward black cherries and earth. Tannins are rounded and smooth, finishing soft and easy.

Full bodied but not lacking charm, this Pinot from the Awatere subsection of Marlborough blends cherry fruit with earthy, mushroomy scents of black truffles. Seriously long on the finish; drink now.

Virtually dry, the 2008 Nautilus Pinot Gris is also lighter and leaner than many of its competitors. Pineapple and melon aromas and flavors finish crisply, buoyed by a dash of white pepper. Drink now–2011.
