A fascinating wine. Tastes sweet and finishes bone dry, offering rich, tangerine and honey flavors, accented with crisp acidity. Nice as a cocktail sipper, and will play well with Asian fare.

This is the best dry Gewürz I’ve ever had from Navarro. It really is bone dry and very high in acidity, two good things, but without richness, the wine would be thin. However, there’s an incredible array of peach, lychee, citrus, honeysuckle and vanilla spice flavors. This is the closest to Alsace that California Gewürz gets.

Perfectly fills the need in California for a bone-dry, racy white wine. Acidity is the star here, enriched with savory lemon and lime zest, grilled pineapple, pepper and mineral flavors. After all the oak and supersweetness of too many wines, it makes you want to sing and dance.

Muscat Blanc is turning out to be one of Navarro’s best wines. The ’07, from a supercool vintage, is a little off the rich pace of the ’06, but shows the same admirable qualities of dryness, racy acidity and complex flavor. It’s like a taste of Meyer lemon zest and grilled peach flesh, with a sprinkle of white pepper and cinnamon.

Enormously sweet, almost like drinking honey, except that it’s wine. With an amazing 21% residual sugar, it just knocks you out with sweetness, but then the rich flavors of apricot jam and vanilla wafer kick in, brightened and balanced with lively acidity. The end result is fabulosity.

Stunningly clean and intense aromas of lemon and lime, vanilla, kiwi, and new-mown grass greet the nose. The flavors are also strong and penetrating, thanks to high acidity. Citrus is the dominant theme. A wonderful interpretation of Sauvignon Blanc as a serious food wine. Best Buy.

A cold climate wine brimming with sharp cherry-rasberry aromas and flavors. Oak is not evident here--just that big, brilliant blast of fruit, in a very dry wine of considerable acidity. It's also light as a feather, with airy tannins. The round, supple texture makes it a restaurant favorite.

Another lovely Gewurz from Navarro. Made with neutral oak fermentation, it’s rich and crisp and spicy, with a mélange of exotic fruit and wildflower flavors.

I don’t think of Navarro as a Cabernet house, but go figure. In fact, go find this wine, if you want a credible alternative to “down there,” as they say in these parts. Dry, delicious and in a league of its own for California Cabernet, and clearly poised to get better. —S.H.

If you’re looking for a California Riesling that’s a worthy rival to German ones, try this wine. Clean, zesty aromas of wildflowers, apples and lime lead to racy fruit flavors underscored by very high acidity. There’s a tangy minerality that makes it feel steely and firm. It’s not bone dry, but close enough. Call it California Spatlese. —S.H.
