Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Nelms Road is the second label of Woodward Canyon, and shows Rick Small’s sure-handed winemaking skills. Young fruit in a forward style, it has hints of green-ness, but nothing detrimental, and just enough oaky spice to kick up the flavor interest.

Nice effort in this value label, showing clean varietal character in the nose, and tight, focused flavors across the palate. It’s solid and flavorful, though one-dimensional.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Nelms Road is Woodward Canyon’s value label, but what a lovely bottle of wine this is! It puts a lot of insipid California Merlots to shame with its spicy, peppery fruit and clean, lightly herbal persistence through the finish.

Firm and tannic, this is a solid, budget cab with some earthy notes of bark and a core of tight red currant fruit. In the mouth flavors of tart berry dominate, with a tannic bite in the back end. Air it out!

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
A vivid, fresh and fragrant wine, this is alive with a luscious mix of flavors from the intriguing mix of grapes, including Syrah, Dolcetto and Barbera. Lots of strawberry, sweet cherry candy and lively, juicy acids make this a standout. There are more and more well-made red blends selling at this price point in Washington, but this goes right to the top.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
The blend includes presswine from the estate and other top vineyards; and the Cabernet, though dominant, is padded with an interesting mix of grapes, including some Italian varieties. It’s deep, plummy, laced with complex flavors that begin with ripe and tangy red berries and black cherries, and lead into accents of coffee, earth and baking chocolate. The tangy natural acids keep this wine sharp and focused, and the Italian varieties seem to bump up the sweetness in the finish.

Another lovely effort from Nelms Road. This is firm and loaded with dense black fruits, the long midpalate spreading deliciously into a full, rich, earthy finish. Forest floor, earth, hints of leather and barnyard, and lovely fruit all mingle to create a rich and sexy wine.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
This blend of Merlot, Cabernet, Barbera and Syrah has become a popular glass pour around the country. It’s easy to understand the appeal; it’s very soft, lush and fruity, yet has a richness that speaks of nicely ripened grapes. The fruit tastes like ripe cherries—young, bright and fresh—and plums. Extra time brings in hints of cut tobacco, fresh hay and earth.
