This Bordeaux blend isn’t austere, exactly, but feels a little Old World. Maybe it’s the wine’s dryish tannins and modest size, or maybe it’s that wines from the cool-climate Adelaide Hills just aren’t oversized by definition. It’s a very good wine, though, with a base of black plum and some meat and oak aromas on the nose.

This wine nicely displays the fleshy pear, melon and citrus notes of unoaked Chard. It’s plump and medium-bodied, with a clean, refreshing finish. What it isn’t is particularly complex, but it will still go well with any number of seafood or chicken dishes this summer.

Dusty, chalky aromas and flavors coat toned-down grapefruit and fresh herb notes underneath. Dry and understated overall, but enjoyable. A Sem-Sauv blend, with just 5% Pinot Gris thrown in. 162 cases produced. Imported by Click Wine Group.

Juicy and crisp, what this wine lacks in concentration it makes up for in charm. The nose overflows with red raspberry, vanilla and coconut scents that slide into Morellino cherries in the mouth before finishing up with solid hit of acidity. Try with salmon. Drink now to one year.

Winemaker Peter Leske has made only 80 cases of this 16% alcohol Zin, and, however unconvential a variety for Australia, it is a noble effort. Medium-bodied with a gummy, resiny texture, the palate offers sweet red fruit, plus a smooth mineral-woody overlay. Finishes a little hot, but with nice caramel and earth notes, and some drying tannins. - D.M.

A decent stand-in for New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, this medium-weight wine has some cat-pee aromas mixed with celery and grapefruit. The passion-fruit flavors finish long and tangy.

A smooth, easy-to-drink wine made to the New World formula: Sweet caramel, vanilla and peach aromas and flavors, capped off by spicy oak on the finish.

The mouthfeel of this wine is just right—an airy, delicate lacework that glides the flavors over the tongue. But the flavors are just so-so, harkening back to the Kinks famous line, “C-O-L-A cola.” Finishes with some dry tannins and a touch of citrus. —J.C.

A blend of Cabernet, Tempranillo and Zinfandel; you've got to hand it to Nepenthe for experimenting with new varieties. Smells cool-climate, with nuances of eucalyptus/fresh herb, and taut, cherry fruit. Soft and dry in the mouth, where red plum and tangy oak flavors are the key players. It's a nice red wine, but one that just hasn't hit its stride yet.

Initial scents of paint thinner blow off to reveal a tropical cornucopia of mango, pineapple and guava. Meanwhile, the lime-inflected palate is crisp, elegant and sophisticated and ends on a crisp chalk note. Try with fresh seafood.
