A pure, all-out Zinfandel with enticing black and red fruit on the nose followed by spicy, black peppery undertones and rich berry and plum. Tannins are nicely integrated yet still pronounced yet the finish is long and incredibly smooth.

Soft and chocolaty, with an infusion of cassis, soy and licorice, this lip-smacking Zin finishes a bit hot and peppery, with a hint of raisiny sweetness. Keeps you coming back due to the rich flavors.

A big, chewy Zinfandel that’ll throw you on the ground and lather you in berry-incased tannins, peppery body and all-out lusciousness. All the fruit comes from Shake Ridge Ranch, Ann Kraemer’s rock-star vineyard, from a trio of clones (Heart’s Desire, Mendo and Monte Rosso) and the 12% Petite Sirah adds a dusty backdrop to the finish, which also surprises with a touch of licorice. The oak is present, in a good way.

This is one of those juicily extracted Zins that blasts a hole in the palate. It has big flavors of black, blue and red wild berries, with a stimulating peppery finish. A dry wine with dusty tannins that will cut through meats and cheeses.

Here’s a Zin that defines Calaveras County. It’s big and lusty in wild forest blackberry, blueberry, currant and chocolate flavors, with a briary, brambly mouthfeel, and tons of spices. Finishes thoroughly dry and tannic. Has a complexity that makes you want to keep on drinking.

As the name implies, this is a big Zinfandel, full-bodied and mouthfilling. It has strong, but dry, flavors of wild blackberries and anise, and the kinds of briary, brambly notes that make you think of a California forest on a hot summer afternoon. Now–2012.

It’s hard to make Petite Sirah smooth and elegant, but Newsome-Harlow has done it. The wine shows classically fine tannins, while the flavors run toward milk chocolate, ripe blackberries and lots of crushed black pepper. Delicious and refined, a great wine for peppersteak.
