Nicholas Cole Cellars is the winery, and the grapes are sourced from top vineyards such as Klipsun, Champoux, DuBrul, Alder Ridge and Canoe Ridge. This is a straightforward Bordeaux blend—Cabernet, Merlot and Cab Franc—soft and spicy with a sensuous cooked-plum flavor. It’s already showing a bit of a Port-like or pruny edge and mature flavors suggesting cooked fruits, cola and confectionary spice.

Very ripe flavors of berries and figs dominate this Cab-centric Bordeaux blend, along with intriguing side notes suggesting melon and cassis, smoke and mocha. It’s a big, sexy wine, its fruit flavors backed with thick, ripe, but chalky tannins. If there is a downside, it is that it comes off as a bit monolithic.

Half Cab Sauvignon, half Cab Franc, from two top vineyards (Champoux and Klipsun), this wine has improved dramatically since its initial release. Truly Bordeaux-like, it has fascinating streaks of lead pencil, tar and leather, layered and textured, behind supple, substantial cassis and berry fruit. Balanced and deep.

This is the wine formerly known as Claret. The new vintage is still young, grapey, looser and more broadly fruity than the sensational ’01. But what's interesting are layers of ripe fruits, tar, mineral, dark chocolate and chalk. The wine just seems to constantly reveal more of itself as it sits in the glass.

This ripe, rich, almost decadently thick wine is about as close as a Washington vintner can come to the decadently ripe style of the cultish Bordeaux blends of California. Along with the unctuous New World fruit, sap and flesh, there are thick, ripe tannins and a vivid acid underpinning. It drinks well right out of the bottle, the flavors beautifully wrapped together, mixing black fruits, black olives, herb and earth, smoke and coffee and toast.

Soft aromas with a mix of plum, berry, melon and smooth mocha. The scents envelop you and the flavors follow, good, still tight, still firm, still showing a little bit of green tea in the tannins. It’s structured well, with a forward, lush, roundness from the Merlot, backed with more assertive tannins and some moist earth flavors from the Cab Franc. Just a hint of coffee comes through at the end.

Tight, tart, racy and stylish; this Bordeaux blend of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and 15% Cab Franc is the best yet from this young winery, a neighbor of Leonetti. Tart, primary fruit sets up a foundation that is substantial and tannic. There’s plenty of power here; it just needs more time.

This 100% estate-grown Syrah remains obstinately hard and tight, with a strongly tannic streak. Tangy and concentrated fruit flavors include boysenberry and loganberry jam, with a streak of graphite and stone. Give it a lot of breathing time—decanting would be best.
