Fresh and fruity, this is a prime example of good tawny. It has flavors of currants and figs, along with some wood acidity which gives it a great tawny character.

Already a modern classic of the Douro, this red wine from Niepoort, with its baked apple and blackberry aromas, is intensely fruity and rounded with sweet wood, black plum and jelly flavors. The texture is smooth, soft, perhaps just missing a grip of tannin.

This firmly tannic wine shows rich fruit and warm black berry flavors spiced with fig juice and sultanas. It is a solid, chunky effort, needing a few months’ bottle age to achieve its full, impressive character.

Master Portmaker Dirk Niepoort seems also to excell at table wines. Dark and purple in color, it is filled with great black fruits, with blackberries and huge dark wood tastes. Smoky flavors combine with dark raisins and big fruits. Well-balanced, despite the high alcohol (14.5%), it is a stunning wine. —R.V.

A more leathery, hot-country wine than Batuta, but this is still mighty impressive. Huge, dark and black, it has dark, rich fruit flavors with great power and concentration. Acidity shows through at the end to just give it a lift. —R.V.

Pisca vineyard is a recent purchase by Niepoort, although the company has bought fruit there for many years. This is a first as a single quinta wine, softer than the Niepoort vintage, immediately attractive, finely balanced. It has structure and sweet fruit.

As so often, Niepoort comes through with a fabulous wine. It is dry and structured, with mature flavors that suggest there are wines in the blend that are older than 10 years. There is a bitter chocolate character, intense bitter almonds and finishing freshness and acidity. The whole comes in a concentrated, intense package.

This impressively concentrated wine has classic burnt caramel aromas, with dense, fig and bitter chocolate flavors. It is rich, delicious and tastes somewhat older than its 30-year label.

Heady, perfumed wine, like a fortified Muscat from the south of France. It’s rich and sweet, despite its dry descriptor. A delicious wine, but certainly not for mixing.
