Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
With this wine the Egurens of Rioja fame have hit the mother lode in Toro. The ’01 version of Termanthia is outrageously powerful and deep, like a shot to the jaw from Lennox Lewis in his prime. It’s maxed out in terms of leather, smoky oak, and depth of fruit. Almost hard to describe, it’s so big and mauling. Hold until at least 2008. 330 cases made.

Dense and dark, with huge black-fruit aromas, toasty oak, chocolate and balsamic notes. Numanthia is ripe, rugged and intense, with in-your-face black fruit, coffee and burnt-toast accents. The feel and finish are deep as a cool well, and smooth as a whistle. Masculine to the max, and pretty close to being ready to drink. Best to hold until the fall or winter. 12,000 cases made.

Termanthia is the pinnacle of Tinta de Toro. Aromas of wild blackberry, crude oil, forest floor and truffles are just now showing themselves, while the tight, tannic palate is full of black plum, blackberry and bitter chocolate flavors. Espresso and roast meat notes grace the dark, jam-packed finish, and as a whole this is one bold, boisterous wine. Best in 2011 thru 2013. Only 531 cases.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Sly in the early innings and then menthol, forest, spice, charcoal and earthy black-fruit aromas emerge to rally this bruiser into its prime, which entails monster fruit flavors, rugged tannins, and a stout, peppery finish. The core power on this wine is beyond reproach. Will cellar nicely for at least five years, possibly more.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Dark, rubbery and focused on the nose, while the palate is wider, richer and propped up by a band of zesty acidity. The flavors are typical of Toro, meaning dark blackberry and boysenberry. A finish of brandied berries, kirsch and chocolate is almost like dessert.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Fine oak, mineral, natural heat and power are all part of the sexy nose. Primary black cherry and plum flavors are warmed up by mild oaky char, but the barrels that enveloped the wine for 16 months were once-used so there isn’t much overt vanilla or woodspice. Smooth across the palate and structured on the finish. Nothing is out of place; drink now through 2012.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Worn leather, hickory and earth scents accent the deep fruit that Numanthia is known for. But it’s the polished mouthfeel and consistent delivery of flavor and texture on this ’05 that distinguishes it from so many big bombers from Toro. By the time it’s done you hardly feel the tannins on the finish, which lingers comfortably for minutes. Excellent wine to drink over the next six years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Less concentrated and oaky than its big brother, Numanthia, but definitely more approachable, and arguably more likable. Some earth and leather deepen and darken the nose, while in the mouth, chunky black fruit kicks up notes of cola and chocolate. Very smooth and sweet, with firm tannins but not the jack-hammer type.

Soft, deep and pure, and a significant step up from the fine-in-its-own-right ’99. The bouquet of blackberry, bacon and herbs is open and welcoming, while the smoky cherry and bacon palate is wonderful. Finishes sweet and easy, with warmth, size and fine tannins. So supple and rich, yet packed with stuffing. A New World masterpiece that’s made for drinking over the next several years.

Expert NoteJanuary 12, 2012
Tight as nails, with earth and mint aromas leading you toward plum, black cherry and leather-like flavors. This is fiercely tannic right now, with a hint of bitterness. But it’s also a high-voltage, new-age wine with copious oak, cola and earth characteristics. Shows good aging potential. Hold until 2005 or 2006.
