Full-bodied and tightly wound, this Shiraz probably won’t show its best for another 2–3 years. It’s a focused, solid wine, with a blackberry and blueberry core and a note of wheat or biscuit. Dry, smooth tannins come on strong in the midpalate and follow through to the finish.

This shows Heathcote’s ability to produce a spicy, savory style of Shiraz, blending aromas of tar, singed coffee and baking spices with an undercurrent of fresh berry fruit. Tannins are soft but present, imparting a dry, gently dusty quality to the finish. Drink now–2015.

Heathcote Shiraz often has an earthy tinge to it, and this offering is no exception. There’s loam and a touch of molasses on the nose, then lightly roasted berries, earth and a hint of mushroom in the mouth. It’s large in scale (15% alcohol), but framed by some firm tannins that should soften in 2–3 years.
